Constant hourly crashes :(

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:18 am

Feels like I always need help with Oblivion mods. :P Fallout 3 I got working after a bit, Morrowind I never had any issues. But Oblivion, ugh...I'm not sure if I'll ever get a perfectly stable set of mods. My mod list mostly plays nice with one another, except recently my crashes have gotten worse, instead of crashing once every few hours it's more like every 20 minutes or less now. Sometimes it'll even just crash repeatedly, like right now I can't enter the merchants inn in IC without a crash. I've got my load order set, and I attempted to make a Bashed Patch, but I don't think I did a very good job, otherwise it wouldn't be acting like this... How do I know what to check off to merge? BOSS kind of helps, but sometimes the mods aren't even in the category it mentions, like C. Climate or something.

My load order:

I'll take a crack at this, since I've had the same problems now and then...

Upgrade to Wrye Bash 2.85, if you haven't already.

Get the Unofficial Oblivion Patch and install it.

Use BOSS (or the BOSS HTML master list) to order your mods; if you're doing it manually, add tags as necessary.

Build the bash patch.

Any mods whose names are green can be merged. Just click on the box, and the check will turn to a plus sign.

Download and run TES4LODGEN. This will give you all the LODs you need (which might be necessary for all those ULs; at the least, it can't hurt).

Start the game and wait in an interior for the amount of time it takes to respawn the cells (default is 3 days). I've found that tossing in a mod that alters levelled lists (like MMM) without waiting out the respawn time is often a cause of frequent crashing. TIP: You can set respawn time in the bash patch, under "Tweak Settings". When I need to respawn everything due to adding a mod that alters levelled lists, I set it to 1 day, so I can do get it over with quickly, and then quit and reset to 5 days (my preference). Again, it can't hurt, and it may well help.

MMM - Add En Vars is noted as causing crashes in heavily modded games. You might try removing it.

There's also a patch for StarX VVR and OOO, though I'm not sure where to find it. It fixes some object placements and faction disputes.

All that is excellent advice; then find the thread on RAM ctd issues with heavily modded OB.

Ghost

Are you using http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23208?

I HIGHLY recommend it. Try setting the iHeapAlgorithm to 5 and iHeapSize somewhere between 800 and 1024 (no higher) in the OSR ini.

Before posting I just played about 2 hours without a crash on a heavily modded game.

Don't worry...I get constant hourly crashes too...maybe it is because I have 254 mods running ALL THE TIME!

I do have the stutter removal. Wyre Bash is the latest version, BOSS has everything sorted. So if a bunch of mods are green, I should just merge everything? I wasn't sure if that was a very good idea, the names of the items in my inventory started looking weird once I did that. Had like "C. The Dragon's Purification" etc. I'll take a screenie of my Wyre Bash screen if that helps.

Is there any info in particular I could give that would help you help me?

For what it's worth, I'd recommend trying it with MMM"s Extra Wounding disabled. My setup was unstable till I disabled that mod, and then everything started running smoothly. Perhaps this is due to the fact this specific ESP tries to extend MMM settings to all other mods...

Edit: I've also found MMM and mods that affect road travelers to be an unstable combination. In particular, MMM + Crowded Roads or Crowded Roads Advanced almost inevitably causes a crash for me. The same may be true for MMM + Tamriel Travellers though I've never tried that specific mod.

They do pretty much the same thing, so that could be a problem. I was actually wondering if it was Better Cities, because 90% of my crashes are in cities. If I'm in the wilderness I'm usually okay, if I'm in a dungeon or something I almost never crash.

All the mods that are in green like CM_Better_Wine and Cyrodiilic Brandy, can be merged (I'd recommend getting RealitySpectre's Better Potions - it replaces those two and, I think, Doofdilla's potions as well). Enchantment Restore Wells is merged... but that line should be gray. Odd. Most of the MMM mods should be merged

If you're crashing in the cities, it might be an FPS issue. Open the console and type "tdt" then close the console. Up in the right hand corner, you'll see your FPS. It could also be an issue with missing resources; make sure you've got all those installed too.

Just a suggestion, but you might want to order your mods in WB by load order, not alphabetically - it'll cause less confusion. Also, set "lock times" on them to prevent them from being moved around when you add/remove something.

UFF & RM Assassin Elite Armor.esp is in the wrong place - it should go right after Thieves Arsenal.

Could be. BC can sure be brutal on the ol' PC, depending. FPS drop quite dramatically for me when I'm in any of the BC versions of cities. Particularly B&M BC Bravil and the Imperial waterfront, so far this time. Luckily, for whatever reason(s), not so much to make it unplayable, or crash, for that matter. But yes, BC is a likely enough candidate. I believe one or more parts of it are also "dirty" (i.e., in need of cleaning). Might be misremembering though...

I've got 4GB, but because it's a 32bit Windows 7 it's technically 3.75 GB or something. BC doesn't actually lag me all that bad most of the time.

I just wanted to post an update; I've fixed my crashing problems. I downloaded and installed that 4GB patcher for Oblivion and it seems to have done the trick. The symptoms of a RAM crash fit my problem pretty well, frequent crashes after roughly 20-30 minutes, almost like it's a timer counting down. I guess that timer was the RAM memory filling up. Hopefully this will help anyone else have similar crashing, it could just be a RAM allocation issue.
