Bethesda, please make the water actually scary this time.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:50 am

I agree that water needs to be scarier, but I'm afraid we will never get the scary underwater titans. Bethesda seems to love scaled leveling and a huge scary ocean dwelling monster that you cannot kill at level 1 would be right out.

hmm..well..skyrim probably has the same water temperature as here in norway..which is pretty cold. normal sharks wouldnt really fit well there. of course they could put some fantasy being in there, some monster crabs, flowing water thats hard to get out of maybe..i dunno

I would like to see a huge turtle, as big as an island with a forest growing on it. it wouldn't dive but travel along the coast. Possibly used for a quest line =D

Why stop with turtle, when we can have http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090405195902/avatar/images/7/73/Aang_with_Lion_Turtle.png that talks to us and tells use we're the one :P

They should also make it look more real.Water in OB looked cheep,I mean come on, the ocean has waves, I felt like I was in a bath tub when I was in the water even next to anvil. This is the northern coast, there should be black and fridged waters, waves crashing agianst the coast, chunks of Ice and freeze overs.I hope they at least make it better than Ob, or FO3 and NV water.

I agree but don't just make it all scary and dangerous they should add alot more passive fish and marine life also.

1. I think that the water in OB was meant to be calming to represented the capitol of the empire in "under control" etc.
2. I think that there should be waves in a water way. Even though its to far north if there was a connection to an ocean would be sick. Imagine falling in water then struggling to stay above water and semi drowning as you try to stay above the waves.

Yes, more enemies does not = better at all. It gets to the point of being annoying. Did anyone LIKE fighting off wolves, minotaurs, brown bears, black bears, mountain lions, etc. every 2 minutes along a road or even out the woods in Oblivion? Because I sure didn't. And I don't want to do the same in the water. The amount of slaughterfish they had in Oblivion was just fine, but adding a lot of passive fish would be a great thing. I wouldn't mind however their being one giant squid / octopus or some kind of sea serpent.

I think the occasional creature, and at least one major creature that you would make you really scared to traverse the waters would be great, maybe it only come out at night, but during the day, its dormant at the bottom of the sea.

I would also like to find sunken ships and treasures at the bottom if i looked hard enough.

I don't know how much they are going to develop the shore.. many small islands and fjords but no incentive to go beyond them if I believe the map. would be nice to actually be able to pilot a boat. Not necessarily a longboat but a little rowboat would be nice. I hate how videogames make characters swim now and then to cross water bodies when common sense would have it that one should take a boat instead. I have never seen a character take a little boat to cross water in a roleplaying game so far. I imagine how stupid the heroes of a fantasy film would look if they had to swim with their backpacks and their clothes on everytime they had to cross water. (thinking about the Lord of the rings here )

Here's how you make water of Skyrim scary: you get hypothermia and die, just like most any idiot would if they went swimming in these waters.

A specific example coming from Morrowind comes to mind ;) One thing with bethesda is that, as poignant, realistic immersive and story driven as their games can be they have this ideology that all monsters are evil and are going to attack you. . You may have those profound story line with lots of characters who manage to escape manichean characterisation whereas all the monsters are treated as dumb cannonfodder only there to help you level up and improve your skills... Beware the carnivorous seal and the evil nymph :) ( not to mention the wicked spriggan ) Olivion was the first game to introduce deers and neutral creatures so the quiet little brooks werent so bad after all... Anyway with flying creatures back in the elder scrolls look up and watch out.. the cliff racers might be back :)

It seems to me there were less baddies in the wild back in Daggerfall. Or is just my memory playing tricks on me? Or is it just that the world map was bigger?

Not all water should be dangerous, for those who explore it there should be underwater life that is non-hostile too, both MW and OB lacked that feature.

Also swinging in the water should feel different when you are an Argonian, the only difference is that you cannot drown as an Argonian. I'd like us to swim 25% faster than non-argonians, thus making the water feel more welcoming to us as reptiles with water breathing.

Or not! The climate in Skyrim, (woods, mountains, glaciers, the whole thing) looks quite like the Norwegian climate. During the summer the sea can reach up to 25 degrees celcius on a good summer, and is usually about 18-20 degrees celcius on a regular summer (except for the far north of Norway). During summer you can in the same town either snowboard on a glacier or swin in the fjords. There's no reason why swimming in the seas around Skyrim should be a problem, at least not during the summer months.

I remember first playing Morrowind, and thinking it would be fun to go for a swim in the waters of Seyda Neen...

And getting annihilated by slaughterfish. One of the few moments where I actually jumped out of my chair.

+9000 to most of the above suggestions.

Of course I want the larger entities made rare and I want some underwater dungeons if not an entire City. :hubbahubba:
It would be even more awesome if some could come ashore. ( Like in The Witcher at night )
Make some of them like the Angler fish.
You are swimming calmly when all of a sudden lots of tiny light dots start flickering around and you realize you are dead >.>

Yes yes yes! But...

1) First add lots of fishes. Normal, friendly, passive fishes.

2) Add a few hostile fishes, a few bigger ones and a few smaller ones (slaughterfish for instance).

3) Add SEA MONSTERS to the deepest depths of water. They should be rare, deadly, big, incredibly strong and terrifying!

Small lakes and that are fine. You should feel pretty safe. BUT THE DEEP WATERS! THOSE YOU SHALL FEAR! :D

I remember back when I was like 13 and I first played Oblivion, not really knowing what I was doing. I took up The Forlorn Watchman quest thinking the ship was sunk underwater, so I cluelessly swam to the center of the Larsius River, and then dived straight down but couldn't reach the bottom before I ran outta breath. I could never reach the bottom so I went online to find out where Fin Gleam was and used that for water breathing. I tried again, only to find nothing. Not a ship wreck. Not a massive octopus ready to kill me in one fowl swipe. Not even a [censored] fish.

This was something that bugged me, but not just about oblivion. In morrowind, they set up the place so that i would actually get nervous about what kinda of hellish thing id run into next. Was not expecting kagouti. And they were so well made..but there were so few enemies of the sort. But with any luck we'll see some nice new critters here!
