Skyrim for Mac

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:57 am

Did Oblivion run on Mac?

If so, how well?

Will Skyrim work on Mac?

EDIT: Don't tell me I should get it on PC instead.
If getting it on Mac is a no-no, then I'll be strictly on Xbox 360.

How about get a gaming pc that has windows 7 installed on it for the same price you could buy a pc with mac installed on it from apple (said pc with mac os on it would only have 1/4 of the power of said pc with win7 os on it), then proceed to install MAC OSX on said pc gaming with win7 on a separate partition. Then you would have the most powerful mac OSX system because most highend pc hardware you cant even buy from apple.

See what i did there.

Hehe, yeah you did a good job.

Anyway, maybe it will be ported to Mac later?

2 words: boot camp.

You if you have a mac pro and do a bit of homework you can build a decent gaming machine which dual boots in OSX & Windows. Mac ports are rarely comparable to their PC counterparts in terms of performance, unfortunately.

IMO if you have the capacity to play on a PC, you would be mad to play it on Xbox instead.

I've played a heavily modded Oblivion on my Mac Book Pro in Boot Camp

Despite what the Windows-obsessives will tell you, it is perfectly feasible. I got perfectly acceptable frame rates even with texture packs installed.

That said. I tend to play on my PC, which I have optimised purely for gaming (my Macbook is for 'work'). Also playing a decent and large monitor is more immersive than the screen on my Macbook.

But, yeah, it can be done. And I'll certainly give it a try with Skyrim - just to see how it plays :)

I play Oblivion on my 2008 Macbook Pro, with a bunch of graphics enhancing mods. It's not super smooth with everything maxed out, but it's still more than acceptable.

I can play Oblivion on my 3 year old 24" iMac (Boot Camped) maxed out (no AA) and get a steady 60 fps. Fallout 3 I could play at high settings and get 60fps. New Vegas I have to dial down to 1680 x 1050, for some reason. It doesn't seem to be very well optimized.

Skyrim ia being made for the same console hardware as Oblivion, so I assume it will be fairly scaleable. But I'll probably be upgrading at the end of the year anyway.

Just remember, Oblivion doesn't run on Macs natively (in OSX). If you want to play on a mac, you have to install windows on a partition of your hard drive (using bootcamp).

I play on my macbook pro as well :) works well, though I wish I had a gaming PC.

Im not sure, but developing a game for mac would increase the workload heavly? I ccan only assume it's a totaly different platform to develope?

It's probably a bit late in the day now, but using OpenGL (or a similar API) instead of DirectX would make it more straightforward - e.g. id's forthcoming Tech 5 engine.

I've never used Crossover, but its an emulator so I doubt that you'd get acceptance performance level to be honest.

Remember that, effectively, Boot Camp turns your Mac into a PC. That's not the case with Crossover - you're still running Mac OS, then the emulator software as well.
