Pub Life

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:01 am

I was thinking that I would like to see a bit more character to the pubs in Skyrim. Where the bar staff actually serve you and you can go for a drink with your companions.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that books will be read in 3D this time, which adds to the immersivness of the game. It would be cool to sit next to a roaring fire and actually see the light from the fire hit the book as you read it.

I would love it if the devs took this further and added traditional games like Chess, draughts and dice games. I would spend hours in the pubs if we could do things like this!

The funny thing is that while I didn't enjoy chess much in RL, I coul play this a lot inside a RPG game.

Yeah - more depth in pubs would be great. I'd really like to see an opportunity to have non-lethal brawls in pubs too... the kind of punch-ups you'd expect to see in a rowdy Nord pub after a few too many meads without everyone pulling out swords and kicking off a massacre.

Oh, God please add a card game where you can win money! I loved playing that card game in KOTOR (pazak?).

Not a big fan of card games in games. Never even touched caravan but I'm not adverse to putting them in. They could even be the cause of afforementioned bar brawls. But yeah. I'd like to sit in a bar with an animation of my character taking dregs from a mug of grog.

Yes. The taverns and pubs in Oblivion bored me. Not at all the Medieval-Fantasy pub setting. It was, in reality, silent NPC's doing not much.

I'd like to hear a minstrel's lute inside, with people dancing and singing to it, arm-in-arm. I'd like to see Nords' playing drinking games, to see who can really drink the most. Maybe you'd see people playing board games. These things, and more, would make the taverns more believable - more fitting to the pub atmosphere.

Sorry I didn't write more, or in greater depth. I'm way too tired. :P

The Drunken Dragon Inn in OBshould have offered so much more. OUt in the middle of no where on the road to Leyawiin and who's in it? The landlord (R.I.P.) and an Imperial Guardman. Where were the travellers, the bards, the shady guys on the lam?

Spoiler
It's mandatory for every English pub landlady to do this once, I expect Bethesda to honour a time old tradition and implement it into the UK version of Skyrim.
Spoiler
Not really... :P

I'd love more atmospheric pubs - some travelling bard playing some tunes, background pvssyr and the like.

It's a completely different game i know, but some of the tricks metro 2033 used to inject some life into populated areas would translate well in skyrim i reckon. That and the little details stalker had like npc's playing musical instruments as they sat beside campfires.

Todd promised us an "alive" game with a genuine atmospheric feeling to it, with local ecosystems and economies etc.
I really hope there is some life to the inns - This is where every other game have failed. Musicians :violin: and mini-games (Elder Scrolls-chess please  ) sounds awesome!

Now thats a good idea. some pubs with actuall action would be fun. Not all but some. And winning/loosing money would make them more usefull than just unloading crap on the bartender and buying apples and booz to have a blurry screen.

If the radiant engine is upgraded to something else than 3 senteces stupidly mindbogling it would be interesting to have some conversations that you can only have in taverns.
But i don t have much faith on this last part, sounds take a lot of space and Consoles are still limited to a single Disk.
Damn day they implemented voiced crap with space limited consoles.

I would love to spend ridiculous amounts of time in a fake pub or tavern... I want to stumble around the wilderness, come to a random inn, and actually spend some restful free time with the locals. Maybe you find the Inn of the Last Home? You have the "old man" telling stories to children by the fire (maybe he is regaling them with tales of the previous games, or telling of your characters deeds so far in this one), there is the shady mage glowering from some dark corner, the wild warriors playing drinking games and flirting with the fiery bar maids, perhaps there are some fellow adventurers who can tell you of ruins you haven't found, or compare notes on monsters, or give you quests in which they will accompany you to said ruins or monsters.
I also would love to have some music and dancing, even if it is preset and repetitive.... just not the ridiculously painful dances of the chicks from the House of Earthly delights... or the one from the Shivering Isles.. really those were terrible... and kind of painful to watch. I want some fun dancing and music, maybe an animation for my character to dance with NPC's or to pick up a loot. Or even if you can only watch... it should be fun and interesting. Like the one demon door (I don't remember which one off the top of my head) in Fable III with the inn full of the dancing skeletons... that was easily one of my most favorite places in the game... and all it was was good music and ... dancing skeletons. Its a game, have fun!

In short, yes, I approve of this idea.

pubs life should be the town's/cities' local get together and most people should be present, look at the first lord of the rings as an example when they travel to bree! vagabonds mixed with regular travelers for inns' outside of cities and normal folk inside cities.

I wonder if they'll try and go down a similar route to New Vegas with a card game, complete with a psuedo-quest to collect cards for a deck.

For some reason I never have had any interest in Caravan in New Vegas, so I'm kinda hoping they don't go down that route. Something more distinctive would be better - perhaps a board game of sorts, something in the mould of Backgammon or MahJong, but more distinctive to Skyrim. Rather than simply being a mini-game that you could play with people in Inns, it could be set up as something with 'ranks', even a league where you could rise up through ranks by playing people in different Inns.

Another approach would be something like that Oblivion Collectible Cards mod where you could collect and display cards from throughout the game world. Perhaps even swap them with other characters in pubs.
