custom character names?

Post » Sun Jun 06, 2010 7:02 pm

i know that there might be other topics about this but since i couldn't find one i just ask again if you think there will be custom character names (of course race specific) which the NPC could pronounce, i don't want to be called the hero of kvatch or the dovahkiin my whole life... maybe not everybody should know my name but the NPC with a high disposition.

Custom names for the player of course. Ones NPCs will speak, no. Sure its possible, have a list of names for each race and six. Pick one at char creation and NPCs will use it. Hardly going to happen though, imo.

Not likely.

As stated above, not likely. What's an RPG without you naming your charachter!? :)

According to http://chriswetherell.com/elf/index.php my elven name is Maedhros Númeness?.

Alwas had trouble with naming my little elves. Not anymore. :celebration:

And what's wrong with being called dragonborn !? That's cool. :)

Stranger, Outlander starting off with, maybe how you're addressed will change depending on your skills/guild rank, I would like to be called Sir Knight everywhere I go.

This. I'm quite enjoying being recognised as a "daughter of Skyrim" in OB at the mo  As long as there are names relating to what you've done and what race you are like in previous games, I'll be happy.

considering how many times it would have to be said. probably not. if yes, the list of names would be super limited. the status quo works and it was never that emersion breaking since there aren't really any other rpgs that handle the same problem any differently.

If there was no voice acting it could be implemented easily enough.

But since we have fully voiced characters, that would not be likely unless they invent some kind of advanced text-to-voice program(Is it even possible, I know they have Macs have that voice thing), but that would be so much for such a small thing like pronouncing names also half the names would come from a mix of high fantasy and such names that would probrably not even pronounce it like you would want.

No, its not gonna happen.

Dear god, what have they done to Tolkien's languages? Unless your actual name is "glitter of metal" I'm calling shenanigans on that generator, and entire website for that matter.

I've played a number of RPGs that don't let you name you're character.

But yes, I'd say this won't happen in Skyrim, because the game will likely let you type you're own name as in past games, and thats what I'd want. Because there's no way a list of premade names could provide as much customization as letting me type my own. This does of course mean NPCs won't be able to refer to my character by name, but I can live with that. It's like that in other RPGs that let you name you're character and have voiced dialog too. Morrowind could only avoid it because the dialog was not voice acted, but it seems like in Skyrim, it will be, so having NPCs refer to you're character by name probably wouldn't be feasible. Unless they have your name only show up in subtitles while the voice acting replaces it with the appropriate pronoun, the name of your race, or the title of Dovakhiin or Dragonborn or just leaves it out depending on the circumstances, but I don't expect to see that, for one thing because it might get a little confusing if subtitles say something different from the voice acting.

Yeah... It's kind of random. Just to see what it would do I typed "Elrond Legolas" as my name and it gave me: Elrohir Mithrandír as my elven name. So, according to the generator Elrond used a elven thesaurus to name one of his sons. And apparently Legolas is Gandalf... <_<

Anyway on topic: I doubt something like this would be implemented, and I honestly prefer them calling me by my various titles.
