adding spears to the game

Post » Sun Jun 06, 2010 8:50 pm

I have figured out a way to put spears in oblivion, but no one is really playing it any more and I am wondering if I should make a mod if basically it is going to be no big deal, and my idea isn't to just change it to the crummy staff animations you can put any animation for it, also with this system you can add things like throwing knives to the game
I am just wondering if I should bother with it, or I can tell someone how to do it if they want to

I would be very graceful if you could "bother" with it

well, before you commit to what I know for a fact will be a very time consuming project, i suggest you have a quick look at unnecessary violence (especially the UVII thread) since it handles spears and throwing weapons.

If you could create a quality implementation of spears and throwing weapons I would be super grateful, it would add a lot to the Vvardenfell project. :goodjob:

What do you mean no one is really playing it any more?!
And it's the mods that keep us playing and replaying. So if you think you can add something of interest to the game (and this sounds like just the thing) then by all means go right ahead.

Go on then what's "this system" that will add custom spear combat animations AND throwing weapons to the game? Call it professional curiosity...

No one plays Oblivion anymore?
j/k, seriously though, look at the Fallout 3 forums at 3am in the middle of the week and see 3 or 4 people on it. Then come here and look at the 20 - 30 people still on :)
People still play Oblivion and will continue to play it long after the next Elder Scrolls comes out, people still play Morrowind.
I cant picture my current character using spears (he uses small easily concealable weapons, at least easily concealabe in my mind) , but I bet a lot of people will, and they'll be happy you created this mod.
In the end though, it's your mod and should be up to you. If it's fun for you, then do it, if not then dont.

One of my characters needs to be wielding a spear. So, that game is on pause. Like a couple of others, actually. All for different reasons. :obliviongate:

Does not add throwing spears but http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12611 does have an option to change the holding of weapons so that they are held like a spear and has a somewhat slow animation for thrusting with them.

ok well I don't really feel like working on another mod while I am working on my swan song mod (last and greatest one for oblivion)
but anyways this is how you make the spear
1.you get a spear mesh and set it as one hand or two hand it doesn't matter which
2.duplicate the regular folder for animations and change it to something else
3.whatever you set the spear as replace all the animations that have that type with whatever you have for an animation (i.e. if you did two handed replace all the animations that contain 2 handed in it)
4.create a new character and set the skeleton for the one
another person had the same idea for this mod and it is called playable and NPC creatures, but he did it so that you can play as different races (so if you want to mess around with the system I mad then just look at what he did)
and please do not think I copied him in this idea this mod came out way after I figured it out
apparently there is supposed to be a way that you can switch the skeleton with a function, but I haven't figured it out
you can use this same system to do all sorts of different weapons so long as you have the animation

I'd love to have a spear and throwing knife mod. In fact, I was thinking recently about how cool it would be if there was a mod that brought back the old Morrowind skills, like medium armour with all those cool Vvardenfell Imports armours and stuff. I have no idea how you would go about creating a new skill though, you may need to muck about with the games engine. Oh yeah, and
No one plays Oblivion anymore?
this.

I did this for myself and MERP a while ago, but with a different approach (and easier in my opinion). I just used a spear model as a staff and then scripted the invisible spell that the spear casts to act as if the spear was damaging the enemy. I'm no animator, and there are very few in the Oblivion modding community from what I could tell so I just used the vanilla staff attack animation which actually works pretty well. I then just added in stuff like a chance for critical attack, staggering, enchantments (using welkynd stones for now), a new spear skill that influences your damage, and a bunch of other stuff. You can see it in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf0UrbISovU and the latter part of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75Mo9F1rnjI&feature=related.

I was thinking of releasing it on its own, but I only have one crummy spear model.

Anyways, my point is that you can make a spear work many different ways. I don't completely understand your method there but I just wanted you to know there are easier work-arounds.

yeh I have done those workarounds, but they turn out kinda crummy if you want to see how mine turned out click http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-Kt3_C9NZE
these animations are not mine I borrowed them from someone else

My goodness, the only reason this wasn't implemented before is 1.Because switching skeletons on the fly hadn't been possible and 2. Animating is hard. I know TheTalkingToaster uses an OBSE script to switch skeletons for races in game, that can be attached to a script on each spear that changes Actor skeleton on equip. If it is as easy as that, it shouldn't actually take to long to make. Hooray for workarounds!

that is pretty much what I am saying and one person already made the animation for spears, btw how does the script work to switch skeletons on the fly, I couldn't find a function

The script is an Oblivion Script Extender script and a new one at that. Even though I use OBSE, as a modder I am not too sure how to utilize it. I do know that the command was made for TheTalkingToaster's Playable creature mod.
