Download vs retail

Post » Wed Jun 09, 2010 1:10 am

lmao, that is perhaps the funniest thing I've read in forever. Exactly how fast do you expect to be able to download a game that would normally come on a DVD(Say, anything over 2 gigs)? I mean, if I could download an entire game in a few hours, I would be very content with that, lol.

On this 30mbps connection with an average download speed of around 1.5-2.5mb/s, 2GB takes around 20 minutes. FIOS plans go up to 50mpbs, but that's quite expensive and probably not worth it in the long run.

Well it's around half my connection, so I guess it would take around twice as long. The ISP is also a factor, some companies are better than others.

Ahh, I hate my buddy then. He lives about as far out from town as I do, but on the other side, and he just got cable at 12mbps. I have Cable envy now, LOL

The problem is not merely from my slow 1500/256 ADSL1 internet connection, but also what speed the connection I can get to the server is.
Most of the time, the best speed I can get from servers is maybe a quarter of what my internet connection is capable of.
I think you can see why the idea of digital distributed downloadable copies of games is less than appealing to me.

That sort of connection 'fun' combined with my preference for liking having all the physical stuff that comes with games, I don't see myself ever changing in who I buy PC games

I prefer retail physical over digital download. Only excepting those which have better support via digital distribution i.e. games from the 1990's and early 2000's which have built-in compatibility for newer Windows operating systems. Case in point, I bought the Command & Conquer: The First Decade compilation as retail for only $17.99 online. Yes I prefer owning a manufactured disc, cover, manual and other goodies compared to digital distribution.
Lately I've been eyeing more and more compilation packs for series of games which are retail. If it's a game such as the X-COM series, yes I'll buy the pack from Steam. If it's a game such as BLOOD STONE amongst other newer titles, I'm buying the retail.

EDIT: I'm paying for 16mpbs a month from Comcast and actually getting 30mbps. Yes I greatly prefer owning a physical retail copy instead of something which is data on a hard drive.

I prefer digital over retail, as I find it annoying to insert disc to play (unles you use one of those handy dandy... :nono: ).

However I dislike having my games tied to eg. Steam, being forced to download patches in order to play and not being able to trade the game in if I don't like it.

So if retail is cheaper, i go retail. If digital is cheaper, i go digital.

I've started to use Amazon (UK) more though.

Off topic: Why are some games much more expensive on Amazon US than UK?

eg.

according to a Currency converter the UK equivalent price would be about 33
I'd just chalk that up to differing vendors on opposite sides of the pond

Just different markets I guess.

Often Amazon UK is cheaper than Amazon germany too. I then import games/movies from the UK. Thanks to the EU there is no VAT or customes duties.

I only like DLC's if I can back them up to re-install (F2P MMORPGs) or re-download (a la Blizzard games) in the inevitable circumstance of reformatting my PC, which I do between every 6 months to every year and a half, as well as possibly play them on my laptop. Otherwise, I tend to prefer tangible discs for accomplishing that.

With a 12mb connection, you'd probably download very close to 1MB/second stable, which would be close to 1GB every 17 minutes or so.

It's this. The UK probably has the most competitive games market in the EU.

I used to import some from America back when the exchange rate made it half the normal price for me. Not so much now.

After reading the last few posts, a thought about the Margaritaville episode from South Park came to mind. :lmao:

Download in almost all cases.

The only exception is if the swag in a CE is incredible, like Duke Nukem Forever's Balls of steel edition. It comes with a bust of Duke...a bust.

Retail. I have never bought any digital game. Why? Cause they're much more expensive than retail in my country, example - Dragon Age 2 retail - 129 PLN (32 EUR), same game on steam - 200 PLN (49 EUR). And with retail I have games in my language.

Ever since the boom of virtual drives, I've been ripping my most precious discs to .iso and keep my collector discs in the shelf. DRMs ruined it somewhat, but I got the way around.

Back when games come with huge manual and lots of goodies, I used to love retails. However most often than not, games after 2000 turned out to have a big box with a disc and a few sheets of paper manual. When they shrunk the boxes, I simply decided discs are obsolete to me.
