Places to visit in Jacksonville, FL?

Post » Wed Jun 09, 2010 1:35 pm

This weekend I'm in Jacksonville, FL for business travel. We have sunday off so I'm thinking about going to some places to visit. Basically I want to go to places that have good sightseeing opportunities that I can take photos for my gf at home. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Museum of Contemporary Art was pretty neat when I was down there. If you can make time, there's always the beach not too far away. The night-life is Jacksonville was pretty awesome last I went there. I pass through it a lot when I'm on my way to Gainesville.

Sightseeing near Jacksonville? I'd go to St. Augustine, which it is said to be the oldest city in the US. It has the ruins of a Spanish fort, a cemetery were soldiers from the Seminole-Indian War are buried, things of that nature. It's just south of Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens. A must see. It's located on the Northside, about fifteen minutes from the airport.
Fort Caroline Historical Center if you are a history buff, that is in Arlington subdivison.

The Riverwalk, in downtown Jax. Do both sides of the river ....you can ride the tram across the river, the tram will take you near the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Science and History, and there are shopping dining and other amenities nearby. You can go on a river cruise or ghost tour. NIght pictures would be pretty, the Bridges ( all five, it's a huge river, are lit.)

St Augustine is a good hour and a half away, and is better seen in cooler weather. It's crowded, if you do go, make use of the public parking garage. The local government LOVES writing expensive parking tickets there, and everything is pricey. If you do decide to go, check out the Castillo de San Marco, they shoot the cannons off. The Old Jail and the Cemetery are pretty cool too. Ripley's Belive it or Not is pretty kitcshy and tourist trappish.

St. Augustine is a definite, lots of fun stuff to do there like visit the Castillo de San Marco or go to the beach ( I recommend Crescent beach just south of St. Augustine beach, its a little less crowded.) There's also all of the cool little store in St. Augustine, I always end up spending a lot of time in them, especially the one with all the knives and swords :P

Thank you guys for the advice. I think St Augustine is interesting but a bit too far. How about the beaches? Which ones are really pretty?

Closest one to the Airport with good scenery would be Little Talbot Island. Check out the Kingsley Plantation, educational, historical, and on the way to Talbot Island.
Hugenot Park is also near Talbot Island, the park has Ocean on one side and the St John's River on the other. You can ride the ferry across to Mayport, and hit Kathyrn Abbey Hanna Park. Swim at your own risk, lifeguards will not be on duty until the official beach opening in summer.
Avoid Jax Beach, Neptune Beach, and Ponte Vedra Beach, there is little public acess, and limited parking.
