Lucid Dreaming

Post » Thu Jun 17, 2010 9:58 am

I tried lucid dreaming last night, but everytime I started to slip into a dream I'd immediately realize I was dreaming and wake up. Happened about 3 times.

Any tips on how to keep sleeping

For me it seems like if I control it too much it stops being a dream, and that's what I do if I don't like it.

For me asking myself on a regular basis if what I was seeing is real everyday every now and then works perfectly. But it's different for other people. I might also remind you guys that lucid dreaming doesn't last long at all. Especially not long enough to get home and pop in Skyrim. You get too distracted by then and forget you're dreaming.

I've never had a "lucid dream" and I have to say I'm a bit sceptical about the whole idea of it. I think I read somewhere that dreams reflect what you are thinking about just before you fall asleep? Perhaps if you think about controlling your dreams, you will have a dream where you realise you are dreaming and can control it, but you're not really you're just dreaming about controlling it because you were thinking about having a lucid dream before you fell asleep?
Also, you can convince yourself that methods are going to work can't you? Like, sitting on newspapers stops travel sickness. So maybe if you believe that listening to tones or counting backwards will help you control your dreams, it makes you have a dream about dreaming and controlling it? In the same way as thinking about it before you go to sleep does?
I don't know if any of that makes sense. :P

I often realise I'm dreaming while I'm dreaming (I try to push my index finger through the palm of my hand and if it works I'm sure I'm dreaming) but unfortunately I can't change the scene or anything :( I sometimes try conjuring up random people or cool surroundings but I usually wake up. I can walk around and do whatever I want and interact with the people who are already there but I can't create anything new. It's still pretty sweet though. It usually happens when I wake up in the middle of the night and then drift off to sleep again. Apparently it works best if you wake up right in the middle of your REM sleep, so just set your alarm clock to five hours or something from the moment you go to bed, and when it goes off, you should have been right in the middle of your REM sleep, and then just think "yay I'm gonna do some lucid dreaming now'" for a couple minutes until you fall asleep again and then if you're lucky you'll have a lucid dream.

I have a pretty good grasp on controlling my dreams...oddly enough though...I haven't recalled a dream in a while...must be the lack of sleep.

Usually when i'm in some sort of peril or I get in trouble, i'll take myself out of the situation as a whole. Its hard to explain. I guess you could compare it to a video game when you pause it and reload from an earlier chapter.

Sadly, I have no way to control where I end up...but my dreams never deny me what I want..because I'm aware that i'm asleep and there are no consequences.

There was this one time I was in a parking lot, going to my car and a man tried to mug me and my brother. I knew it was a dream so I decided to take the bullet for my brother as I'd be left unscathed. Turns out I wasn't. My head started feeling heavy as if I had a concussion and I just remember watching myself get shot in the head repeatedly until I did that pause reload thing I mentioned earlier.

Its kind of a hit and miss thing, lucid dreaming.

Should be careful in your dreams. You can die in real life if you die in your dreams. Your brain thinks your body is dead so it causes cardiac arrest.

Anyone else have the problem of the dream having a mind of it's own despite you know it's a dream?

I've only ever had one lucid dream. I was in a shopping centre and I remember thinking "Wow, I'm dreaming and I know I'm dreaming". I tested it out by telling a nearby woman to take her clothes off and I remember feeling really nervous about it in case I was mistaken and it was actually real life. She did get 'em off but unfortunately I woke up soon after :(

...What if your weren't dreaming?

Couldn't this be kinda dangerous? In which you get reality of dreams mixed up?

I do, I frequently can't change the dream on a whim even though my mind has complete control over it.
