BGS made smithing a new skill while eliminating others. I'm sure it will be great. I hope we can combine different sword parts (blade-hilt-guard-sheath would be cool).

I once designed a gun that shoots guns that shoot knives! :celebration:

Yo dawg, we heard you like guns, so we put a gun in yo gun so you can shoot yo gun while you're shooting yo gun!

Like a spear. :P

You stole my joke :P

While not very original, I'd probably make a sword like http://www.google.nl/imgres?imgurl=http://www.aceros-de-hispania.com/image/theoden-sword/theoden-swords.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.aceros-de-hispania.com/swords-knives/theoden-sword.asp&usg=__eLEUt04GRaKpeX-EG5prk5Rf1Xc=&h=1011&w=352&sz=96&hl=nl&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=26H4WlbThQjxIM:&tbnh=125&tbnw=40&ei=NaJdTbT8CIjsOcHmnd0K&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtheoden%2527s%2Bsword%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dnl%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:nl:official%26biw%3D1920%26bih%3D900%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=102&vpy=4&dur=4841&hovh=381&hovw=132&tx=93&ty=198&oei=NaJdTbT8CIjsOcHmnd0K&page=1&ndsp=78&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0 or http://www.google.nl/imgres?imgurl=http://dcl16.nl/dvd/ambiance/lotr/glamdring.jpg&imgrefurl=http://dcl16.nl/dvd/ambiance/lotr/index.htm&usg=__tlW7QGte85Uj7ADoS0k0brpj0DM=&h=1276&w=298&sz=49&hl=nl&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=eNWRTCCXTGOEbM:&tbnh=116&tbnw=27&ei=IqJdTeHhK4abOvGaqNQK&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dglamdring%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dnl%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:nl:official%26biw%3D1920%26bih%3D900%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=95&vpy=4&dur=5426&hovh=400&hovw=93&tx=98&ty=206&oei=IqJdTeHhK4abOvGaqNQK&page=1&ndsp=89&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0, depending on the kind of character I'm playing. Those swords are beautiful.

I foresee a recipe list, and not actual custom weapons. I would love to wish it so,alas wishing wont make it true. I do see engraving when you enchant might be possible,or at the very least naming it for sure.

im not just talking about the uniqueness of the gear we craft, that should be a given, we have come a really long way since the valve games. im talking about the implementation of crafting. what i liked in dark messiah was that it wasn't a menu. it was all interactive, and it was highly convincing. is it JUST about the gear and customization? like would you like it to be like WoWs crafting? just a basic implementation of menus and resources? that would be fine if they had some sort of animation and time sequence, but if the action of forging ends up like alchemy ill be disappointed. i doubt very seriously it will be like that though. i expect some sort of interactive crafting, maybe not as in depth as the dark messiah, but with plenty more options.

The crafybits mod is like this, everything is in front of you and you eiter work them with knife or hammer like kife on stave to make bow or use a plate and add things together, arrow shafts you make from staves, arrow heads from metal you forged and glue you made become arrows.
Pretty impressive and natural.

This.

This is the only way you guys will be able to make fully custom weapons like the topic creator is describing, putting a system like this into the game on it's own would take so much time and effort to develop and really makes no sense when it can already be done with mods. It would take hundreds of hours to make into a good system when there is really no point whatsoever to putting it in.

Then whats the point in mining materials, chopping wood etc.
To me them and smithing ( which is making weapons, not just repairing ) will allow us to make weapons.
They also said in the podcast, they've done a lot more with crafting.
They could easily put pre-set sword, axe, whatever shapes in,just like they have done with the face and body customization, where you choose nose shape etc.
It could be done without mods easily.

If it will turn out to be true, then I shall forge the Soul Reaver. And the TES universe will collapse on itself from its awesomeness.

If there is such a system, I doubt it'll be too complex. Likely it'd be you can pick from 5 or so hilts, pick 5 or so blade types and lengths, and then depending on what materials you have you can change the material/texture. (iron, steel, glass, ebony, etc)

I don't think you're going to get a second-life-esque modeling engine. But I'd love to use a system as I described, perhaps certain people could teach you new blade styles and such that you can make

Dao broadswords.

It would be cool if we could at least get moulds and make any shape of sword/hilt out of those moulds, so I could have an ebony sword that looksd like a silver one or a steel one that looks Elven.

I was thinking of dual dao broadswords as soon as I read the topic! Finally, my character from Baulder's Gate can be reincarnated in a TES game!

...but it's not like we will be able to forge weapons that much, if we get any customization options they will most likely be selecting premade molds/colors.

I think it would be more along the line of Sword A + Sword B = Sword C. Sword C + Sword A = Sword E. Basically What I think is you can forge weapons but it will be a more powerful version of said weapons, but they will have a set design. More like the games Dragon Quest,
