Questions lacking answers

Post » Thu Jul 01, 2010 10:50 am

I recently fired back up Oblivion and have been reading a lot of the lore sections over at UESP and there are a few things I don't follow.

It says that while Mundus was Lorkhan's idea it was Magnus who designed it. It then goes on to say (in different places) that Magnus left before its creation at the last minute and in another article it states that Magnus became "disgusted" with Mundus and left; his trail being the hole in the sky they call the sun.

So what made Magnus leave at the last minute? Why and at what was he disgusted? Why isn't he revered by anyone today? It's says all magic comes from his work/presence but I see no temples and such like the nine and I don't see him mentioned much if at all. Is he in Aetherius? If no one is worshiping him and such what does he do all day? In an article I read it says he can (and has been known to) take over the body (or I guess lend his help) to a magic user. Why do this? What's his stake/concern? Like some of the nine have their own domain, focus like mercy, luck etc. what does he tie himself to (if anything)?

I don't get why Mundus' creation was the "trap" and how this leads some to call Lorkhan the "trickster". What is it about the creation that gets everyone so fired up that they rip the heart out his chest and shoot it down to Nirn with an arrow?

Why are there holes forming in the moons that are Lorkhan's "flesh"?

A quote:

"A Padomaic being named Lorkhan envisions the creation of a new kind of divinity: a planet called Nirn. This realm will fulfill the urges of his sphere by serving as a construct that will allow him to achieve ultimate liberty- Nu-Mantia."

To the second sentence I just say, what? Ultimate Liberty? What?

Are these "spirits" that became the "earthbones" land masses? Or some kind of life force(s)?

If I understood what I read correctly the Aldmer were the first race and had direct connection to the gods or spirits, or whatever forces that were there, and they were hacked at Lorkhan because his creation/idea of Mundus/Mortality pretty much nixed that. If that is accurate then where were they living before the world was created by the "gods"? If it was Nirn then would it be more accurate to say that Lorkhan's idea was the creation of mortality more then a physical place kind of idea?

Maybe I have not read enough to find these answers (though I have read a lot!!!!) but these are things I have not been able to put together.

Thanks.

The gods didn't realize they'd be cutting parts of themselves off I think.
Why are there holes forming in the moons that are Lorkhan's "flesh"?

Its a corpse, its rotting

As I understand it, mortals are essentially subgradients of the gods, but the elves don't like the the fact that they've been made...smaller, if you will

*As far as I know, we don't know why Magnus left, other than be probably realized that he probably did not want to have to sacrifice himself or give a part of himself. For this, that's probably why he was "disgusted." Though, I can't help to think that the "disgusted" part was a merrish insert. But...amputating yourself does svck

*As to why there are no temples dedicated to him, or why he's not part of the nine, or really that worshiped at all. One answer could be game mechanics. Ick, I know and I don't really like that answer. Another is that he has not part in Mundus at all, other than making a giant hole in the sky, thus allowing magicka to seep in. Because of that, he's really not that worshiped, but there are probably cults dedicated to him, and the Mages Guild seems to recognize this. I think he is now in the Aetherius, but I'm not 100% on this. As to what he's probably doing...nothing that we really know. Probably sitting around.

*Here's another tidbit to remember about Shor/Shezzar/Lorkhan and the aedra. Most info we know about the divines, and aedra have been in the merrish school of thought. By this I mean:
Elves: We were gods, and awesome! But thanks to Lorkhan, we're now smaller and not awesome anymore, and we want to go back to that!
Men: This is our home, not some trap, and Shor/Shezzar made this place to test us, and allow us to move forward into awesomeness!

Now, upon seeing this, you can see why people regard Mundus as a "trap." The Dwemer tried moving backwards to the "first stroke of Padomay" using the Numdium and becoming its golden skin. However, it seems they have failed, but...I like to think there's something we don't really know. The Altmer try to move back by selective breathing, and research as to how to extend their lives. And yes, this is an obsession with them. But, through Vivec, we have read there's a way to move forward. This is known as CHIM. I'll leave that part for you to look for it, since it's quite a mouth full. I think what Tiber Septim did was another way, but I'll need someone to correct me on this.

*The Earthbones are the spirits pre-mundus that sacrificed themselves completely to give Nirn physics and form.

So what made Magnus leave at the last minute? Why and at what was he disgusted? Why isn’t he revered by anyone today? It’s says all magic comes from his work/presence but I see no temples and such like the nine and I don’t see him mentioned much if at all. Is he in Aetherius? If no one is worshiping him and such what does he do all day? In an article I read it says he can (and has been known to) take over the body (or I guess lend his help) to a magic user. Why do this? What’s his stake/concern? Like some of the nine have their own domain, focus like mercy, luck etc. what does he tie himself to (if anything)?

I don’t get why Mundus’ creation was the “trap” and how this leads some to call Lorkhan the “trickster”. What is it about the creation that gets everyone so fired up that they rip the heart out his chest and shoot it down to Nirn with an arrow?

Compare Nirn to the sixteen Daedric realms. It is under no one's control, is full of feuding forces, and is bogged down by oppressive laws of nature and spirit. The Divines are not like the Daedra Lords. They do not have the ability to act autonomously and meddle in cosmic affairs with all their power. They are reliant on human worship and thus have fractured identities, with no true face. Akatosh has been "broken" by mortal experiments with time. The moth priests claim he is insane. Dunmer texts refer to the Aedra as "mush-minded." People on the forum will tell you that the original spirits are dead, and we worship our personified memories of them.

It should be easy to see why a spirit roaming the free Aetherius would become horrified at this limiting existence. The elves share Magnus' opinion.

Magic doesn't come from Magnus, it comes from Aetherius. (the two are almost synonymous). The hole Magnus tore in space lets the magic in. The sun.

A quote:

“A Padomaic being named Lorkhan envisions the creation of a new kind of divinity: a planet called Nirn. This realm will fulfill the urges of his sphere by serving as a construct that will allow him to achieve ultimate liberty- Nu-Mantia.

To the second sentence I just say, what? Ultimate Liberty? What?

According to Vivec, Lorkhan was dissatisfied with the state of the universe and his place in it. He meant to use the mortal plane as a means of reaching a higher state of existence for himself. (Chim, which is a topic for another time.) I wrote that part of uesp hurriedly and in expectation that it would be revised and audited, so maybe Nu-Mantia wasn't the best term to use. But Mankar writes of that, and it literally means freedom, with a bit of a pun because it sounds like "new man." Mankar cast himself loose from the mortal world with its constraints, ancestor gods and the Dreamsleeve cycle of reincarnation that binds life together, and created a world of his own that existed on his own terms, dependent on his self for existence.

Are these “spirits” that became the “earthbones” land masses? Or some kind of life force(s)?

They are the remnants of the spirits that completely dissolved, becoming existence as we know it. Rocks and chipmunks, and probably photosynthesis too.

Isn't Magnus more like 'Mystra' in a sense of the phrase.

he isn't so much as the Patron of magick, but he turned himself into the raw force of magick so it would never run out. Think about it, why doesn't magick run out if their isn't something sustaining it like the essence of one of the first beings in creation.

No, he's still and completely himself, no missing pieces. The thing is, he's not in Mundus at all. All Magnus did was run away, and create a giant gaping hole when he left. It's hole that's causing LOTS of magic to leak out. The stars are also the same thing, holes from when the other spirits fled the creation of Mundus
