F:NV languages: PS3 and future DLC and patches...

Post » Sun Jul 04, 2010 11:50 pm

Hello people,

I've been a couple of hours searching for information all around the web (aka: Google) and I haven't found anything so here I come and ask you.

I loved Fallout 3 and I'm going to buy, for sure, the new installment, New Vegas. I am from Spain, I like playing games on my PlayStation3 and I loved Fallout 3 in English, and I really want New Vegas in this language. The thing is, I bought F3-GOTY from a UK retailer and so, the game included every DLC and patch to date. Now, if I buy the game from a UK retailer as well, I'll get the English voices and subtitles, but I'm worried that I will have compatibility issues with future DLC and possibly patches (actually, I'd swear after buying F3 GOTY, I had to install a small patch, and the game is 99.9% in English - the S.P.E.C.I.A.L book appears in Spanish :S).

So, if I buy New Vegas in the UK, will future patches and DLC be compatible and, if so, will they be in English, Spanish or Spanglish? This is really important for me to know how to get the game...

Thank you very much!

Patches on the PS3 are downloaded for the one version you actually start. DLC, on the other hand, might only be available in its translated form in your local PSN store.
Would have to ask someone who played F3 in a different language version from his local PSN store and bought DLC from that.

I don't remember if we had any official word on this but I believe Steam would check your credit card and select the language version based on that.
But yeah, it would be nice to hear from Gstaff, especially since I'd encounter the same problem.

EDIT : Sorry, didn't notice you were talking about the PS3 version. Still, my point mostly stands. :P

Thank you for your comments so far, let's see if I can get this little "problem" solved... :D

Steam only chooses uncut/cut versions that way, in general Steam games are multilanguage. Only if the publisher of the game is a completely different one in another country you might not be able to get a multilanguage version. Or, if you only get a cut version in the Steam store, that one might be restricted to your local language, too.
NV has the same engine as F3, thus DLC can be offered in multiple languages over Steam, as whether the game is cut or uncut is only decided by the main game.

I know about the general policy of Steam games, and in fact, I think I already had a discussion with CCNA on that, to which he essentially replied that it may be like that for other publishers but not for Bethesda and their games. I suppose it would be like that with DLCs too, assuming he wasn't wrong (and I have no reason to assume that), so.. no actually I already said everything I have to say.

This game will not release in a Multilanguage Version. It will be localized based on the location you bought it from, if from a Bricks and Mortar store or a online retailer. If you buy the disk, all you have to do is connect to Steam to activate it, not install it. So, the language will be what you bought the disk in.

Edit See Gstaff's Post below with the answer from Steam on this.

If you buy the disk, all you have to do is connect to Steam to activate it, not install it. So, the language will be what you bought the disk in.

Where the issue will come from is when you purchase and download it from Steam. The Credit Card's issuing bank will be used for the Localization. So, if you use a Spanish bank based Credit Card, you will get a Spanish language game. If you want to play in English, then you need a UK or US issued Credit Card (or other English Language country). Patches should go with the langauge of the game you have installed, since you will not be paying for them, there is no credit card check. You may have to specify the language, if it is not an automatic process. What you do not want to do is apply a patch from a different language then the game you installed. That would be a mess.

I am not sure what will happen if there is a DLC and the language is an issue. That may remain to be resolved. However since there are no DLCs announced, let's not talk about what may or may not happen with them.

Thank you very much for your response. Now I know that if I buy it for PC, I shouldn't download it directly from Steam, but buy the disc from an English retailer... Regarding the localization and patches, same applies to PS3 version?

Since Patches are free, there should be no CC check, however if you have a CC on the Steam Cloud, that may or may not get in the way. I would think that you could choose the language of the patch or it would be compared to what you have installed.

EDIT DLCs have been annouced, but not the process, so the mechanism, is not known at this time.

Well, then just let it be said that I would prefer the DLC would choose its language from the installed main game. As probably everyone would. At least on the PC that should be possible with Steam, one of the things that it has over GfWL.

CCNA I think you are misreading something... I was asking in my last question about the PlayStation3 version, not the PC/Steam one! :) Thanks anyway!

Not 100% on this by any means but at a guess since the PSN store works based off nationality any direct download would be downloaded via your PSN (which is tied to the nationality it's registered under). If you buy it from an account registered in Spain it will be the Spanish released version, the same way DLC bought from an american account is american even if the account holder lives in and operates from England.

Now I don't know if this will determine it but off the top of my head it's all I can think of.

I know you can use an alternative PSN account and register it to another nationality to download their content from the nation specific store but I do not know if you can transfer that between accounts or if it would work at all. Sorry I can't expand more! Maybe best to ask Sawyer or another dev?

It is an issue with all platforms, so we need to get to the root of the matter. So, even though you asked about the PS3, we are going to try and get an answer for all platforms.

OK, thank you! Even better - selfishly speaking -, because Steam is my second option :)

Like Fallout 3, there's one language track on the game disc. So if you're in Spain, the game disc will have the Spanish language track. If you're looking for an English version, you'll need to explore other options to get the English disc.

Steam actually presents interesting options. Hearing back from someone at Valve, the following was explained:

All languages are available to all users worldwide through the Steam backend.

The way it works is that users will install the game from the CD. If it's a French CD disc, it will default to installing in French and pull that content from the disk. However, if the user decides they would prefer to install in English then Steam will download that content from the servers. It's also the case that if the user does install in French and later decides to play in English, they can pull that content from the Steam servers at a later date.

Update: One clarfication. If you're in Germany, you'll only be able to select the German version because of the restrictions on content in that country.

Well, I managed to self-answer my question regarding the PlayStation3 thing. With Fallout 3, every country had it's own version, and DLC were compatible only with the store of the country you bought the game - in the store it says the code of the game the DLC works with - BLES-00337 for Spain. I suppose the same applies to patches and that's why my UK Fallout 3 GOTY has a couple of things in Spanish. So if I want it in English I'll have to make a UK account and that's quite a hassle... I suppose I'll have it in my language! (I completely discard the PC version, I'm looking forward to playing it in my console) I suppose with New Vegas we will have also different BLES codes depending on the country? Am I wrong?

Thank you!

you might need to download the DLC from the UK PSN Store .
use a fake UK address and create a UK account, download the DLC, then switch to you master account and install it .
