Anyone else thinking that the two stories will cross somehow?

Anyone who hasn't read the Novel I highly recommend that you do.

The novel was only set about twenty years after Oblivion. It was leaked, however, in the promotional material for the novel (though it was quickly pulled) that Skyrim would be 200 years after Oblivion, and that's since been confirmed.

But yes, I do expect to see some elements of the background plot from the novel present in some way in Skyrim, but a lot can change in nearly two centuries.

Hm Ive read a bit of the novel,
But I don't think they will really interact like the mass effect series, who know maybe morrowind will be involved?

In small ways maybe, alot can change in 4 decades, or maybe not since it is Elder scrolls.

WELCOME TOO THE FORUMS! :celebrate:

Actually, it says "Four decades after the Oblivion crisis" on the back cover of the book.

I was wrong the novel wasn't set 200 years after Oblivion.

But I wonder how Morrowind is doing....

I knew it was something like that. ;) A few decades after Oblivion and a century and then some from Skyrim.

I suspect that the Median dynasty mentioned in the novels might be a factor, or their successors. The "Empire" being a dark and diminished shadow of what it once was in the Third Era; sort of an Interregnum like the time between Remans and the Septims.

Anyone who is going crazy over Skyrim (most ppl on this forum) should read the novel. I'm about to reread it as soon as I finish the I am Legend novel (much better than the movie, Fallout fans will likely enjoy). The novel does start out a little slow but the author really explores the world and strong links are made to Morrowind, but nothing leads up to what Skyrim is about. I cant wait for the next novel to come out!!! I imagine it will setup the game nicely

Linked in a sense where Cyrodiil plunged into civil war following the death of the only heir left (who heroically died defending the Imperial city against Mehrunes Dagon) who was btw a dragonborn (dovakhiin) as all Septims were and suddenly 200 years after (3E600-something) you appear as the dragoborn (dovakhiin)!?

No I don't think they will be linked. :)

I'm anticipating they'll at least reference each other - but probably won't be directly linked.

Well, technically it's 4E200
Sorry, just had to nitpick

On the subject:
It's more than possible that they'll be related in some way, seeing ad they call Skyrim a "direct sequel to Oblivion"

Since the proper timeline has now been established, I'll skip forward to say that it will affect it in the way that the story involved the eruption of Red Mountain, killing many, making Morrowind mostly uninhabitable, starting the Argonian invasion and conquering of Morrowind, the exodus of the Dunmer to Solstheim and probably Skyrim, and the further collapse of the Cyrodiilic empire, now run by Titus Mede.

But as far as Bethesda's concerned they are.

And no, I don't have any sources at hand, but people have asked and Bethesda has said that yes, they are canon. Go ahead and ask Pete, Gstaff, etc. They'll tell you the same thing.

Yep, they are lore. And if you don't like them being cannon because of the whole Morrowind deal that was foretold in Morrowind... So can't blame the novels for that.

I think that the book was set around 40-50 years before Skyrim happens, but maybe we'll meet some of the characters, but only as easter eggs or something, so as not to force people to buy the book to know what the [censored] is going on

What about the second novel? Any news on it? I mean it has to come out before Skyrim right?

Oh and the 200 years after Oblivion thing in the novel that got recalled...That said that the books are to bridge the gap between Oblivion and the next game, which will be set 200 years after Oblivion. Or something like that.

It'll probably be coming out at the same time, or a few weeks before, when Skyrim fever has reached it's height

I'm kinda hoping Umbriel crashes into the middle of Skyrim. It'd make for an interesting settlement, having all those not-quite-humans adapting to life outside of Oblivion.
