Big problem with TES4Lodgen

Post » Thu Jul 15, 2010 1:05 am

Okay, I'm here with a big problem when I try to run TES4Lodgen. At the start it runs normal, when it's loading my eps's, but when it's replacing Tamriel Lod, the weird sounds start to happen. I get all kinds of errors in TES4Lodgen, and my computer starts making beeping sounds, and when I keep it going for longer, I get even weirder sounds where it seems like there's something trying to get out of my computer or something. Now the sounds won't stop till I reboot it. Here's my load order:

I would recommend running chkdsk on your HDD, as if you're getting sounds + lots of errors (OS + Applications) while doing lots of writes (which is what TES4LODGEN does when it creates the .lod files), chances are it's at its End of Life. I would also back up any important files on that hard drive.

These problems are NOT due to TES4LODGEN, however I'd say the application is highlighting existing problems.

Pretty much. Second the backup suggestion. ASAP, I would add! :(

49 Hammerfell_HighRock.esp
4A Blackmarsh.esp
4B Valenwood.esp
4C Summerset.esp

These incur errors in TES Lod generator - nothing fatal, just it does not expect certain data.

Turn off your Sound Scheme (click your speaker and select "no sound") thus the error "pling" will not sound and load up your sound buffer. You can turn it on again afterwards if you want.

Anyhow - nothing to worry about.

Cheers!

Well, the thing is that I'm getting the errors inside of the TES4Lodgen exe, while it's running. It's like this: error: Whitepinetree couldn't be replaced blablabla. I can't copy it because it won't let me copy it, and I don't want those sounds again. I'm only getting the errors while running Lodgen.

EDIT: @Locksley: Ohh, that's great news. Only I got really worried about some of the sounds, as those really didn't come from my speakers, but they came directly from my computer. Very loud scratching sounds while running the program, and they started appearing after I kept the exe running when the beeps came.

Well, if the sounds are still scratching after you turn off your sound scheme you might start to worry; as tes lod write allot of small files to the HD. And yeah, lots of errors when running the new land masses :obliviongate:

Do what was first advised! Back up your data, and run chkdsk. Then replace your hard drive. You've got failing hardware in your PC and if you continue to use it eventually the drive will fail and you'll lose all your data.
As for the TES4LODGen error messages, Locksley is correct in labelling those ESPs. They will cause precisely the warning messages you're getting with TES4LODGen, but just ignore the warnings (the ESPs aren't faulty, they simply do something which the creator of TES4LODGen never anticipated, so the program is correctly flagging what it believes to be errors, but they're not really), everything is still being processed as intended by TES4LODGen.

Wait, I need to buy a new hard drive? And what is chkdsk?

And what is chkdsk?

Easiest way to that, or whatever it might be called for your OS, is to right click on (typically) C: drive, go to Properties, then Tools, and select Error Checking (or the like). Might want to check for actual hardware errors, in particular.

At least this way, you'll know. Well, probably...

Quite likely. Beeps from within the PC itself rather than from the speakers means a hardware error/fault/failure. If the beeps are occurring as TES4LODGen is running, this implies that as TES4LODGen attempts to write new data to the hard drive, it is coming across bad sectors on your hard drive, and so the beeps are informing you of this. Now it is possible to get around bad sectors by using chkdsk, which will look for bad sectors and attempt to disable them so that your PC will stop using that part of the drive. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 to learn how to use chkdsk. But if you do have bad sectors, then typically you can expect more and more to appear on the drive, so if this is the problem, it would be wise to replace the drive as soon as possible.

tes4edit and tes4lodgen both issue beeps in some circumstances. Before you assume the drive is bad, be absolutely sure that these beeps happen when neither program is being used.

Your description of a scratching sound might simply be a case of having a sound card in the wrong PCI slot. Some motherboards have the drive controller on the same internal channel as one of the PCI slots. If you have a sound card, shut down your PC and try moving it to a different slot.

If that doesn't resolve the problem and the beeps are happening outside of these two programs, then definitely back up all your stuff and replace that drive. chkdsk is only a band-aid, one you shouldn't rely on for anything long term.

There's also the possibility that the drive controller on the motherboard is going out, but that's hard to isolate if the drive is already failing. You should be able to check the Windows event viewer for that, controller errors get logged there.

Absolutely NEVER in all my time using TES4Edit (pretty much daily for two years) have I ever had a beep issue forth from my PC. If the PC case itself is issuing beeps, then the computer is reporting a hardware problem.

Well yeah - if it is the motherboards built in speaker. My sound buffer fills up with Vista's sound scheme Beeps if I don't turn off error "plings" in the sound scheme. I usually run silent anyway but I had not turned off it this time so that's why I knew what caused it.

Which doesn't mean it can't happen, and it does, because I too have been using the program on a near daily basis for more or less the same two years and I've heard the beeps. They're not PC speaker beeps. They're Windows error sounds. I do know the difference. They happen far less frequently now than they did before, but it's still possible and I still run into them from time to time when poking at mods.

Filling up the system's sound buffer with them if a mod generates a bunch isn't out of the question. That's why I suggested that the source of the sounds be verified before starting with hardware diagnostics. There's no need to panic someone about it without good reason.

Looks like you missed Johny Obliv's comment stating that the beeps aren't from his speakers, but from the PC case itself :) Good reason to panic someone.

Well guys, thank you all for your comments. :foodndrink:

I ran chkdsk on my D drive, didn't really make a difference, but I haven't really got anything important on my D drive, so if it fails, I don't really have a problem. And the most important thing is that I know that the LOD is still being generated properly, so that's all okay then.

You also seem to have missed where I put forth one reason for why they'd be loud scratching sounds. The PCI slot problem isn't very common, but far simpler to check than it is to have to go get a new HD. So no, there's no reason to panic someone over it. Especially since he's said the noises only happen when the sound is turned on. The PC speaker isn't normally something you can shut off.

No, I didn't miss it, it simply doesn't mean anything to me, and I had no reason to suggest that was wrong :) Personally I would suspect a failing hard drive if scratching sounds were coming out of my PC, but if PCI cards can make that noise too, I wouldn't know.
And where does Johnny say anything about not getting the sounds when the sound isn't on? Not in this thread.
