Risen 2

Post » Sun Jul 25, 2010 4:34 pm

Searching through the old inter-webs and found an article announcing that Risen 2 was coming and that i would be on both consoles, here's the link http://www.gametrailers.com/news/risen-2-dark-waters-sails/3042 . Question is, who has played it, and if you have, are you excited for the announcement? I have played the game, and while I thought Risen had a few things going for it, overall the game felt dated and possibly TOO much of a throwback to the Gothic series of yesteryear, not to mention I felt the combat system sometimes couldn't handle combat with multiple enemies. Though that's just the opinion of one man, playing the stilted 360 version none the less. So yeah, if you played the game and like/disliked it and want to comment, here you go.

I loved Risen, though I never finished the last chapter... it was too drawn out.

Didn't buy the first game just because of the ridiculous pointless TAGES? 3 machine activation limit DRM. I'm not going to buy Risen 2 if it also has a ridiculous DRM.

I still haven't finished Risen - I enjoyed it at the time but got distracted quite near the beginning and never went back to it... Might pop it in again to tide me over until Skyrim :) If Risen is as good throughout as I found it at the beginning, I reckon I'll probably check out the sequel.

Risen was fantastic. A little more for the hardcoe crowd because there was a lot of grinding involved if you wanted a decent character capable of completing the game. Alot of replayability also because you could play the game with different factions. It had very strong art direction, world design, and the voice acting was natural and beleivable. The combat mechanic was much deeper than first surveyed with timing being key. Heres another article on Risen 2:

If they finally(!) get someone to design women and not those hideous monstrosities that Risen and Gothic had, I'm in. Oh, and it would be best they not make the second half of the game be dungeon crawl after dungeon crawl after dungeon crawl after.... You get the idea.

I think I'll just shamelessly doublepost now, what with nearly two months having passed:

http://uk.ign.com/videos/2011/04/12/risen-2-dark-waters-cinematic-trailer!

No gameplay though. Here's hoping for remotely recognisable gender in females. Oh, and working vodou would be awesome.

I only played the demo of Risen and found it to be a bit clunky for my taste. Does it get better as you progress?

I enjoyed the first two chapters of Risen greatly, the later two chapters, not so much but I still played thru them.
No gameplay though.

I rather dislike trailers that doesn't really show anything <_<

These teaser trailers are becoming far too common for my liking. It's like going back to the PS1 days :P

I played the first Risen and it was decent. I can't say I'm excited about a second one, but it might be worth checking it out

The demo is not really representative of the "meat" of the game. It does get a lot better as you progress. It's not perfect by any stretch of the word, but once you get the hang of it, it does provide a really nice ride.

Risen was among the best RPG experiences I had in years (a short list to begin with), and the sequel is easily my highest anticipated game right now. A pirate themed RPG with gameplay in the vein of the Gothic series... What's not to love?

I actually really liked Risen

it wasn't perfect, but it had some things I think the average modern day RPG is missing.

Things I really liked:
-Dungeons actually have traps and puzzles in them, I really liked this, it made dungeon crawling so much more entertaining to me knowing that I wasn't just going to have mini arena battles in every room. There're actual secrets to be found and traps to walk into and die from that you'll have to actually keep an eye out for.

-Magic served far more function than just another means of combat. So many RPG's today just make magic nothing more than an exception to a sword. In Risen there're actual utility spells like lockpick, levitation, and telekensis all of which had usefulness for me because of the aformentioned puzzles in the dungeons.

-Combat was surprisingly deep, timing was key to succeeding, I played a mage and so the staff fighting was very entertaining since you actually use your staff like a real staff fighter and learn real staff fighting techniques.

-there was an actual neutral path you could take, while some would argue that the classes being affiliated with a morality was restrictive (IE if you played a thief you automatically worked for "The bad guy") I actually quite liked how they handled it. There really is no good or evil in Risen, the characters had very strong feelings towards their goals and believed they were doing what was best, and because of this the game ultimately gave you the ultimate decision of the game, and the way they handled it was very good, suffice to say I actually struggled to figure out what was the best course of action as they DID NOT make it obvious what was the "good" decision, the "bad" decision or the "neutral" decision.

things I didn't like:
-Graphics were good in some areas and horrible in others, as others have mentioned the female character models are absolutely, stunningly horrible looking, it boggles the mind how horrible a time Pyrhana Bytes has when making female character models. But the island looks beautiful, even on the 360 version the game was pretty looking, not nearly as pretty on the PC, but still. I hope in the sequel they'll put more effort into their ports

-the landmass is rather small and doesn't lend itself to variety, while a tropical setting is original for a high fantasy RPG, I would like to see more environments in Risen 2 and a larger landmass

-While I commend the game for not coddling me, it kinda went overboard and really does drop you off on the deep end so to speak. You'll really have to think back to the old days when you would wander aimlessly for some place to be able to tolerate some of Risen's design.

-Combat was very fun, but could also be extremely frustrating, it was very common for me to be gang-[censored] so to speak by enemies. All it took was one hit from an enemy for me to reel back into another enemy and be attacked back and forth between enemies like a human tennis ball. The recovery time after getting hit was too long and really left you vulnerable to inescapable attack loops. What's more, taking on more than one enemy could be overwhelming, even at the highest level I still found myself outmatched when facing more than two enemies at a time. The game does kind of abuse the whole "send legions of enemies after the player to pad the game's length" While there were a good number of utility spells in Risen, there were only three combat spells, ice-bolt, lighting bolt and fireball, these spells could be leveled up but they never visually changed nor did their function. There were no AOE spells which would've helped greatly in battles against multiple enemies.
