I actually really liked Risen
it wasn't perfect, but it had some things I think the average modern day RPG is missing.
Things I really liked:
-Dungeons actually have traps and puzzles in them, I really liked this, it made dungeon crawling so much more entertaining to me knowing that I wasn't just going to have mini arena battles in every room. There're actual secrets to be found and traps to walk into and die from that you'll have to actually keep an eye out for.
-Magic served far more function than just another means of combat. So many RPG's today just make magic nothing more than an exception to a sword. In Risen there're actual utility spells like lockpick, levitation, and telekensis all of which had usefulness for me because of the aformentioned puzzles in the dungeons.
-Combat was surprisingly deep, timing was key to succeeding, I played a mage and so the staff fighting was very entertaining since you actually use your staff like a real staff fighter and learn real staff fighting techniques.
-there was an actual neutral path you could take, while some would argue that the classes being affiliated with a morality was restrictive (IE if you played a thief you automatically worked for "The bad guy") I actually quite liked how they handled it. There really is no good or evil in Risen, the characters had very strong feelings towards their goals and believed they were doing what was best, and because of this the game ultimately gave you the ultimate decision of the game, and the way they handled it was very good, suffice to say I actually struggled to figure out what was the best course of action as they DID NOT make it obvious what was the "good" decision, the "bad" decision or the "neutral" decision.
things I didn't like:
-Graphics were good in some areas and horrible in others, as others have mentioned the female character models are absolutely, stunningly horrible looking, it boggles the mind how horrible a time Pyrhana Bytes has when making female character models. But the island looks beautiful, even on the 360 version the game was pretty looking, not nearly as pretty on the PC, but still. I hope in the sequel they'll put more effort into their ports
-the landmass is rather small and doesn't lend itself to variety, while a tropical setting is original for a high fantasy RPG, I would like to see more environments in Risen 2 and a larger landmass
-While I commend the game for not coddling me, it kinda went overboard and really does drop you off on the deep end so to speak. You'll really have to think back to the old days when you would wander aimlessly for some place to be able to tolerate some of Risen's design.
-Combat was very fun, but could also be extremely frustrating, it was very common for me to be gang-[censored] so to speak by enemies. All it took was one hit from an enemy for me to reel back into another enemy and be attacked back and forth between enemies like a human tennis ball. The recovery time after getting hit was too long and really left you vulnerable to inescapable attack loops. What's more, taking on more than one enemy could be overwhelming, even at the highest level I still found myself outmatched when facing more than two enemies at a time. The game does kind of abuse the whole "send legions of enemies after the player to pad the game's length" While there were a good number of utility spells in Risen, there were only three combat spells, ice-bolt, lighting bolt and fireball, these spells could be leveled up but they never visually changed nor did their function. There were no AOE spells which would've helped greatly in battles against multiple enemies.
