Will this graphics card work on my ancient computer?

Post » Wed Jul 28, 2010 10:19 am

I'm not looking at spending a huge amount of money on this computer. I've been thinking about a new one anyway, among other reasons I blame Skyrim .. I just cant imagine playing that game without maxed out graphics. But untill that time.

The card I'm looking at. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=Radeon+5670&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=14151073178195217658&sa=X&ei=iYKkTc6BF4jcgQeKvfGlCg&ved=0CDAQ8gIwAg#

Do you know which motherboard you have? That is the main indicator of which graphics card you can use.

I'm no expert; however, if you have the PCI-e slot available (not used by something else in your computer) and enough space inside your desktop to fit the card it should work.

If you can wait until around September/October, you will get some great deals on faster graphics cards, however.

The M2N78-LA motherboard inside should be able to use the card. The biggest question here is how much room you have left under that one slot, as there is only one of those and many modern cards use the room of two slots.

Ah, threads with people complaining about their "ancient" computers that are still "way better than mine".

Something to keep in mind that dxdiag won't show is your power supply. The newer card will want more, so make sure you've got it.

The default model for the OP's PC comes with a 350 watt, the card recommends 400 watt, but the comments on the card for Newegg are all in favor of it having no problems with even a 300 watt, only drawing a peak of 80 watts or so.

Rather then make my own thread, hopefully the OP doesn't mind if I hijack his.

I'm looking on Newegg for graphics cards, as I'm going to have to upgrade mine sometime before Skyrim, and I saw something very strange. I found an Nvidia Geforce 460 GTX(which I remember reading is the first Nvidia card that is DX11 compatible) for 184.99 after rebate + free shipping. Then, right next to it, I find a Nvidia Geforce 550 GTX, for 129.99 after rebate, free shipping. Why would a more powerful card be significantly cheaper? here are the links: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127510 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625 so, whats going on here? I am confuzzled!

The numbers don't always reflect the cards performance. The 460 outperforms the 550 by a decent margin. The 550 is sort of an upgrade of an older architecture, and is on par with a radeon 5770.

To the OP: I'd recommend a 5770, which can be had for an extra $10 or so.

Thanks for the replys. When I'm in a less lazy mood I'll look inside my case and see how much room there is. I'll probably just go with the current power supply (found the reviews DEFRON mentioned), if it turns out to be a problem, power supplys aren't that expensive.

Well, I bought the computer around 3 years ago. In the past when I've had a computer for that long, it can almost never play games that are 3 years newer than the computer. Guess I'm just suprised that I'm still able to use this one, even if I do have to turn most graphic settings all the way down.

Hijack away :D

EDIT:

@Sivartus
Just noticed this: "To the OP: I'd recommend a 5770, which can be had for an extra $10 or so. "

Sounds good for that price (just checked around online after seeing your reply), time to do more research :D

I'll do the research for you, because there really is no reason to buy the 5670, I actually can't let you buy it at that price.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-5670,2533.html

It's an old card, it FIRST retailed at $99 and hasn't dropped much since obviously. The 5770 is the only way to go in that immediate price range, if I wasn't clear in the first post. :P

Ok, ok, you convinced me ... that and some of the benchmark tests I saw with the 5770 :D

Computers with quad core CPUs and 5GB RAM are considered ancient already? :P

You have a harsh definition of "ancient."

Since I bought it 3 years ago, I really did think it was ancient

In the past when I bought a computer, after 3 years it couldn't be used for anything other than a paper weight since it couldnt run any current programs. I seem to remember processing speed doubling every year ... bad memory perhaps?

After doing some research and asking questions here, I'm pretty sure the graphics card was the main reason I thought the computer was as old as it is. Hopefully the new one I just orderd will add more time to my computers life :D

The default model for the OP's PC comes with a 350 watt, the card recommends 400 watt, but the comments on the card for Newegg are all in favor of it having no problems with even a 300 watt, only drawing a peak of 80 watts or so.

ya I went overkill on my machine cause I got that 5870 card and decided to get a monster 1kw *Yes as in 1000 watts) power supply. Just glad the svcker didn't cost me an arm and a leg to get like the other ones would have. Most cards I see on newegg are the PCI 2.0 or 2.0x16 slot cards and i'm not sure if those would work with your motherboard.

PC's don't 'age' quite as fast as they used to, in regards to gaming especially. Popularity of consoles/cross platform programming has seen to that, for the moment at least. Also depends what kind of games you like to play of course. But yeah, an old graphic card (espec. if one of the lower lines) can be a bottleneck for games.
