Isometric view in Fallout 2

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:20 pm

I'm considering developing an "old-school" isometric game, and from what I remember of Fallout 1 you couldn't walk straight "up" and "down". Even if you positioned the cursor directly above/below your character he'd zig-zag to that spot. Anyone know if Fallout 2 was the same way?

Also, feel free to post your opinion on whether that specific limitation bothered you. It's somewhat understandable that they wanted to limit all the different sprites/positions/animations to be drawn, but I'm wondering how much wrath that sort of limiation would incur these days.

No, you couldn't walk straight up or down. You just zig-zagged crazily back and forth if you attempted to do so.

The reason for this was, I believe, the hex-based tile system that the engine used.
