Modders: ever thought about tweeting updates?

Post » Tue Aug 17, 2010 1:09 pm

Wow, after reading wrinklyninja's post, I realize he said almost everything for me. Thanks for that, saves me a lot of time :D

Basically, like him, I don't see the point to twitter overall, especially for modders.

I don't have a facebook because I saw no point in it. I made a myspace when it was popular at the time (who didn't?) and I DO use that sometimes. Mostly I just use it for sending a few friends links to whatever random stuff. I talk to them on IM clients occasionally (steam/xfire, etc) but we aren't always on at the same times so I send them stuff on myspace. And obviously I talk to them on the phone from time to time too.

Twitter though, I can't even think of a use for...

I'm with you, personally.

I certainly see what you are trying to do and I think that it would certainly help improve things but shifting the perception of a entire forum just does not work. Especially when a lot of the modders on here are older and don't see the point in these sorts of things.

well I have a twitter, 800+ followers, but then again I have 500 hobbies!

most of the mod and game info I get right here, though, and in tesnexus and perhaps summit.

for what it is worth, my twitter.

Thanks. I appreciate that. Truly.

Cool... Nice photos! I am fascinated by meteorology, especially storms.

I have a dev blog. well it's a wip thread, that I have held open for 8 months and constantly updated. but it's 90% me making updates in between little bits of encouragement. I don't think I need websites, facebooks and twitting as well. would just be extra minutes taken away from actually doing productive stuff. I know people if they cared about what I am doing at all, they'd rather me actually pump it in my modding rather than talking about it.
I spend enough time talking mod in help forums anyway. I can at least justify that, its like giving back, and in the end, helping people might make more mods see the light of day.

I have had a website running for months, the latest on Spruz is a blog, has chat, has forums and so on. Nobody but a few have ever bothered to join or say anything, and comments on this board are as rare as rocking horse cack, so I dont think I will be doing any more than I already have. I would love to have more "follower" involvement, but its lacking from that side at the moment.

I like so many others would love more than anything, practical help, comments and a little "how are you doing" now and again.

Agreed. I wouldnt like to waste my time posting entries that hardly anyone can be bothered to read or post a response to in any more places than I already am. When a few more people start taking the time to interact with modders then perhaps modders will take more time to interact back. Massive thanks from me to those who do post and comment, however irregularly, its all appreciated.

I'm basically a dinosaur as well. No need for all this fancy stuff, social networks, etc.

I have my WIP threads here (for some time I also had some on other forums, but they died out of missing interest, so I didn't revive them senselessly) and my comments on Nexus and PES. If there's anything away from usual, I also have my own website, but it's yet less regularly updated than my WIP threads and fairly out-of-date now.

I'm modding for myself first and foremost. People are interested in what I created or plan to do? Fine. I'll gladly share all I did. They have suggestions or even requests? That's fine, too. These distractions are more than welcome and their ideas help me decide about points I myself couldn't settle on something yet. But I'm not doing this to get followers, fans or "customers". That's what I have my job for. Modding is my hobby, nothing else. I'm going out of my way to keep those people informed who are interested in my work, but I couldn't care less about those who aren't.

Who "is" interested knows where to find information, where I regularly post. I don't "need" others to become interested. After all lately I'm posting more than actually modding, which in itself is a bad thing already.
I have no use for Twitter or any other of these things, because they're certainly not meant to receive an update from me once every... month? year? Certainly not. Plus I love going into detail, entertaining those who are interested to make it worth the wait for them (so I don't feel that bad for letting them wait that long), and this I read is not possible with these platforms either.

Also, if there's anybody interested in Oblivion mods for Argonians, Dragons, custom-shaped bodies for races (or whatever else I'm doing), where would one search? Here, of course, and in the other modding-related forums. Having a Twitter account, Facebook, whatever, would only help those who "know" it already, and those who know me and my work know me from here and the other places I'm posting.

It might be an interesting idea for mods which get regularly updated, the large overhauls, or comparable masterpieces, maybe just posting a notice and a link to a post with all the details, but for me it would only be too much work from my side and too few use for those actually interested.

Thanks again for all the input. Admittedly, it is a far cry from what I expected, but such is life. CoolShady, you summed it up quite well.

I'll leave you all with a few of thoughts on this...

1) If you think Twitter is something that would take a lot of time (unless you consider < 1 minute a lot of time), then you really don't know what Twitter is.

2) If you think Twitter is for parsing out details about, well, much of anything, then you really don't get what Twitter is for.

3) If you think Twitter is just another way for people to socialize, then you've been looking at the wrong accounts.

4) Finally, something isn't useless just because you don't "see the point". 20 years ago, lots of people didn't "see the point" in the internet. I know... I was there, just like some of the dinosaurs.

I work on the leading edge of this stuff; most people don't. It's a big deal to me and what I do, but not to everyone. I get that, really. But I never intended for this thead to become a place for people to express all the reasons they think social media, Twitter in particular, is pointless. It is not pointless, and it could play a role here. Not much of anyone thinks that's a great idea... OK, fair enough. It's not the first thought I've ever had that couldn't get any traction. But really, can we get away from the "Twitter is pointless because..." posts? If you would or wouldn't follow a tweeting modder, OK, say so. If you as a modder would or would not tweet, that's good to hear. These are the things I wanted to know.

Anyway, I think I've probably heard what I needed to. Still, if anyone is interested in this, and particularly if you'd like some help (though there's really not much to it), please feel free to let me know. PMs are welcome, too.

Well, the main question is what such interesting things (which are worth even of that small amount of additional time) oblivion's community could gain from tweeting in comparison to all those already present features of these boards, and TES Nexus, PES, and ORE sites alike? :]

(who didn't?)

I didn't. For the same reasons I never made a Facebook or created a Twitter account. None of that has any value to me and never did. I didn't even put up my own blog until 2007 and a lot of my friends had them for years before that. That's about as far as I've gone into the whole "social media" thing, and I'm sure I'm not even exploiting the blog as well as I could for the things that are discussed there. It's really more of my "home base" on the internet since the software running it is the product of my own creation and houses my project files and image gallery in addition to the blog.

I tell you what... if any of you fine folks decide that you would like to tweet updates, please let me know... I will follow you. And I will try my best to get the word out to others on Twitter. To those that would not, no worries. I'm sure the resources that have served you well over the years will continue to. Cool?

And I implore you... don't be too quick to judge. Twitter really is a valuable service everyone could benefit from.

Well, speaking for myself only - natch ;) - I really did give them a fair trial. I created a Facebook account, added people, etc. I created a Twitter account, "tweeted" a bit (ugh), etc. MySpace... OK, no - never did that one. But I have perused it, including the pages of a few people I know and a few famous (or kinda famous, maybe) folks whose work I happen to admire.

Facebook turned out to be utterly pointless and inane (in my view, not objectively, just to be completely clear on that). Likewise, Twitter. MySpace, I didn't feel inclined (OK, wasn't persuaded!) to join.

When I want to keep in touch with people, I have plenty of ways of doing so. None of them is disappearing any time soon, that I can see.

When I want to catch up on news, current events, project updates and the like, I also have plenty of ways of doing that, without going anywhere near Twitter, or even TV coverage, most of which also leaves me cold, and for similar reasons.
