A little off topic...but does fallout 1 start out rediculous

Thanks for the advice...

...and as for the person who asked if i considered running away...

On the radscorpion one I didn't even get a chance :P There were so many of them there was only one turn, and it involved me going splat.

Yeah, really you just end up dying a lot at first in the first 2 games. Eventually, though, it will be they who flee from you! :gun:

Be sure to take advantage of dialog-based experience, too. In Shady Sands you can do a ton of stuff if you have a nominal Speech and Science skill, and gaining a few levels early on can really help. Note also that with Ian along, clearing out the radscorpion caves (one of the Shady Sands quests) is not so hard, and you can get a bunch of extra experience from that, too, plus some ammo if you keep an eye peeled. Be sure to knock off everything in Shady Sands, then start powering through the quests in Junktown. Hint: be sure to spend a night at the hostel in Junktown!

I think you need outdoors man to prevent random encounters where the enemy starts right on top of you.

High Outdoorsman skill can help, but the encounter scripting is set up so that it doesn't factor into ranges that much. Outdoorsman just makes you less likely to get crappy encounters . . .

I consider any aimed chance below 85% to be unacceptably low, not only because a couple of misses will get you killed late game but because it ruins your crit chance, which is the reason you're targeting shots in the first place. We might just differ on what an acceptable chance to hit is too when we recommend skill levels.

Prolly. I can't say I'm much in favour of <80% to hit either, but then there's some tricks for dealing with powerful opponents other than eyeshots at a safe distance. I can usually lead tough enemies (especially Deathclaws) around with my high-agility characters while my team mates chip away at their health, and Dogmeat had a knack for knocking down even tough enemies, which can be pretty useful.
I found that grenades and rockets are useful even with low skills, especially since they often knock enemies down.

I don't really get into many random encounters with Deathclaws and Muties anyway, and in the non-random ones I am just especially careful. Destroying the Deathclaw nest at the Boneyard is usually an epic fight.

Tagging small guns is worthless . Tag energy weapons or Big guns, or both. Small guns become increasingly worthless later in the game. Just use a shotgun or scoped rifle or a burst weapon untill you find a good energy weapon to use.

Eh, you can beat the game with the .223 pistol, and use explosives in a pinch even with low skills.

Suggest tagging melee. It is great early in the game, and still is very useful late in the game with the right end game melee weapons.

I dunno, the idea of charging a group of Muties with miniguns and rocket launchers doesn't really appeal to me.

My bad. I usually play a high-agility char, so I get to go early, but the encounters with a bunch of radscorpions all around you are tough early on. I don't recall them being very common, you just seem to be particularly lucky guy.
