Mod Cleaning, preferred method for novices?

Post » Sat Aug 28, 2010 12:49 pm

While fiddling with Wrye Bash (I've had it installed for ages but hardly ever use it, not yet running a combination of mods that cries out for a Bash Patch) I noticed it provides a tool to remove “world orphans”. According the Wrye documentation, this is always safe to do. Is that the general consensus?

If so, would removing world orphans via Wrye Bash in conjunction with TES4edit “undelete and disable references” be a safer method for mod cleaning than the use TES4edit “Remove “Indentical to Master” records” with “undelete and disable reference”?, at least for those of us who aren't savvy on which records are safe to remove?

While on the subject, is “Undelete and Disable References” still considered safe in all circumstances?

Remove World Orphans is a specific repair operation that's being done. It isn't related to cleaning a mod of duplicated records and the only reason Bash included the function is because those orphaned records block building of the patch when they exists. I have not found any cases so far where removing them is harmful, and it's not a normal condition outside of making patch mods or other ESP+ESP dependent mods. Since the vast majority of mods won't have this problem, and you'll know it when one does, you shouldn't need to worry about it.

The normal TES4Edit cleaning of removing identical records is generally safe, there are some exceptions such as using it on patch mods and some of the FCOM components.

Undelete and disable has been safe so far in every instance I've used it, regardless of the type of mod.

Using TES Edit isn't hard.

But they should add automatic plugin cleaning feature in Bash :D

I think there was talk of adding it once the CBash module was done, but I don't think it would be wise to have that automated. It's something you still need to have eyes on to review the results before saving the file.
