Running vs. Walking

Post » Fri Sep 10, 2010 7:31 pm

Months to walk between citys?! I can wall between al the towns in my area in around 3 hours they are spread around 15 miles apart, also it's a game, the only way to have such scale would be to have the world broken up which I personly hate, ala fable n dragon age,

Not saying I'd want it at that scale. Daggerfall was the only thing to really approach the true scale of the world, but it also killed random exploration by having so much empty space inbetween everything, necessitating fast travel (even with DaggerXL and it's much larger view distance, it can take a good 10 to 20 minutes of nothing before spotting civilization; sometimes longer).

That said, I would like somewhat longer distances than what was in Oblivion. If for no other reason than to be able to turn down the timescale.. seriously, that's really the only reason I don't lower Oblivion's timescale, because it makes the world feel so small with as fast as I can travel around in game time.

I know exactly what you mean. I always want to walk from a rp standpoint, but it is just too easy to turn run on. I say to myself "oh, I'll only do it to check this out" or "it's almot night and I want to reach Chorrol" but I'm only kidding myself.

I wanted to RP and walk everywhere. It never did work out and I found myself walking only in dungeons and houses because running in such tight spaces was annoying.

Really? I am 6'4 and I walk faster then most people due to my long strides and I mean walk faster not run. I have to actually slow down for people when I am in a group because I tend to out walk people to the point that I leave them literally miles behind. I once walked with a friend from his house to mine, I got there 1 hour and 27 minutes before he did. No two people walk the same and I think it is reasonable to have a fast walking character like I do myself IRL.

Don't you hate that? I loathe taking two steps and then realizing I need to slow down because whoever I am talking to is no longer next to me. I have to do that slow walk shuffle. I'm all for walking at a decent speed.

And in both Morrowind and Oblivion you can walk faster based on your Speed and Athletics.

Between snail and jogger.

This.
Between walking and running.

I'm not sure what you're asking for here. You walk in the game at a realistic pace of any normal human being that would be walking from point-A to point-B. It's obviously going to take some time. That's how it works in real life.

When I walk, I walk faster than an Oblivion PC.
When I run, I run a LOT faster than an Oblivion PC.

And you're this slow even if you have nothing but clothes on you and nothing in your inventory.
Snail and jogger, that's a perfect description.

Let's hope you can actually sprint in Skyrim, and that "sprint" isn't just a petty jogging pace.

Did you play the games? Your speed varies depending on what you're wearing, so that's just plain wrong.

I can agree that running isn't sprinting because who the hell is going to sprint everywhere? I support the sprint feature in Skyrim but there's nothing wrong with the running in the previous games.

And I just straight up do not understand the complaints about the walking speed. It's walking. You go slow. Yeah, people walk different speeds, who cares? It's a video game.

I walk relatively quickly in real life. I'm the annoying jerk who's always bobbing and weaving ahead of people in the hallway because they're moving too slowly. Whilst I do agree the walking speed should be upped a little bit, I don't see the need for another movement option.

You guys are fools. Nobody jogged in the middle ages! They took their sweet time and walked everywhere: the only time they would do otherwise was when being pursued by bears or caught in the middle of a storm. Then they sprinted! Don't you remember Back to the Future Part 3? :P

"But if they have these...automobiles in the future, do people still walk or run?"
"Of course they still run. But for recreation: for fun."
"Run for fun? Ha ha! What the hell kind of future is that?"

lol one time i was like "alright this time i'm going to role play!"
so i walked from east of the imperial city to the mountains west of chorrol, around to bruma braving the jerall mountains, and back down the jeralls to cheydinhal. i then went south to leyawiin, back up to bravil, back to the imperial city, then west to skingrad through the forests of the west weald. my journey ended in anvil when i got tired of walking
started at level 1, and i was level 14 by the time i got to anvil haha.

So your saying you want walking speed to be running speed and running speed to be 2x faster? Or are you saying you want them to be the same speed?

Oh, important: I want my walking speed to NOT depend on my athletics or anything. I want to be able to easily keep up with NPCs. I hated escorting people in Oblivion because I always had to stop every five seconds.

Sure they did. And they did it for the same reason we do it: physical fitness. Human beings aren't born fit. Anyone who wants to be fit has to work at it, no matter what millennium they live in.

No time for walking when youve got people to see, realms to save, and daedra to smite.

It is, or it was, a 2 mile walk from his house to mine. 4 miles both ways. I use to wake up earlier in the morning back in Highschool and walk to his house, then we would bum a ride to school, then walk to his house, and sometimes come back to mine to play Morrowind :toughninja:

I didn't so much mind that everyone I knew was a slow ass, what I hated is when people complained that I walked to fast and in my head I felt like saying "No the problem is you are to f****ing slow." Most of my friends know by now that they either keep up with me, or catch up later when they have the chance.

Was your friend crawling? The average walk speed is around 3miles per hour, unless you teleported there I can't see you beating him by that much unless he stopped for hokers and blow. Which if I was your friend would be entirely possible.

I like to feel immersed in these games so I do walk everywhere. I do like to observe the scenery while I walk, so I created a http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9499 camera system for all of the games since Oblivion. I have adjusted the walking speed, up a little, to match my walking speed in IRL. However, I also lower the running speed to match my jogging speed IRL. I try to limit running to short bursts as if I was sprinting.

As far as walking goes, a good game designer will design the world such that you can walk from town/location to town/location during one game daytime. When traveling, I typically wake up about 5:30AM for my travels. I will go from town to town and spend the night. I also play with darker night mods so traveling at night is not advised.

Walking should be set to a decent pace so we don't have to run all the time.

Running should decrease stamina rapidly - so much so that you're better off walking for long trips.

That way the player isn't incentivized to run EVERYWHERE.
