Magic FX Shaders...

Post » Thu Oct 07, 2010 10:58 pm

There are mods that make textures amazing, there are mods that add god rays and SSAO, and there are mods that let you see from one end of Cyrodil to the other, but I haven't seen any (really high-res or stunning) magic shader replacers, and was wondering if anyone knows of any out there. I ask because I find that the vanilla shaders and FX are some of the lowest res and most messy/blury looking things in the game, especially given how beautiful everything else can be with all the wonderful graphics mods out there, and their sheer ugliness makes me avoid using magic as it always makes the game feel really dated IMO. Now I'm not just some stuck up graphics fiend going on a pompous rant, if there is knowledge/tutorials on how to make your own shaders to replace the vanilla ones. I've got some modding experience, especially in the Photoshop department, and have been with Oblivion since it's release, so if someone can point me in the right direction and lend a guiding hand as I make my own, that'd be great, as this is some relatively un-explored territory for me. But again, if there are some already made out there, that'd be even better, lol. Anyay, thanks for any help/suggestions!

Well if your talking about stuff like fireballs and lightning and frost attacks, thats all particle effects. So its not just making a texture. I guess it just isn't something most people have learned how to do. Midas magic adds lots of new spells/spell effects but it doesn't touch the vanilla spells.

I was thinking the same thing. There's a couple shader replacement mods out there but not exactly what I was expecting.

Would love to see some enhanced effects. EG instead of just the little yellow fireball, add a comet-like tail on it and maybe a brief smoke trail. And a more flame-like impact instead of just a yellow poof ;)

The maker of LAME also made a standalone version of the effects shader for magic weapons, I like it a lot. Here : http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22147
AFAIK it's the same one used in LAME.

LAME is OK and I think uses some of J3X, but I can't stand the pink shader on detect life (a favorite spell) - but http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25204 is amazing (totally mergable into bash as well).

For when shaders get to be annoying - http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5138
and Kuertee's attempt to improve that for realism/survival mods - http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25707
