Oblivion crashes as soon as it starts

Post » Sun Oct 17, 2010 8:34 am

Well, once again, I have messed up my mod list, and Oblivion does not work. :brokencomputer:
As soon as I start it up, it will crash. I have tried several uninstalls of some of my larger, more dangerous mods like OOO, but to no avail.
I'm sorry to ask for help again, but I have no where else to turn, and I'd trust this forum with my life.
:D

Well you could just disable all mods, then load the game. Then, enable each set of mods one by one (IE enable all Better Cities mods first, then Harvest, then OOO, etc) and see where the crashing starts.

Now if you're like me and don't have the patience for that, go grab yourself a copy of BOSS and Wrye Bash. Your load order looks all out of whack to me. BOSS will auto sort your load order for you and give you suggestions on things that need removed or replaced.

Wrye Bash will allow you to create a Bashed Patch, which is useful even if you're not running FCOM.

Be sure to download the main file and the the latest masterlist, under the optional plugins.

Read the readme and download the necessary items or I promise your PC will rage and explode into tiny pieces. Not really, but the program just won't run.

actually, I just used BOSS right before i put this on here, but I may want to try a more updated one, and I do use Wyre Bash as well as I can, but I do think my Bash Patch may want to be updated again as well. But the patch is not all that bad. Not enough that it would crash the game.
I'll check the updates on BOSS again, I think that a few of my mods active may be filter mods.

Activating filter mods will definitely cause problems. The newest masterlist for BOSS is from the 28th, so grab that if you haven't already.

Also, make sure you have the latest Wrye Bash. You should make sure you rebuild your patch when adding new mods. Actually, when rebuilding, it should have a message box before it begins telling you which mods are filters and then it should take care of them on it's own from there.

well, I don't think I have any filters.
Still checking for the most recent BOSS, but would that cause all that much of a problem?

Well load order can be a pretty big issue. I know my load order is currently messed up and I can't load my saved games. I know there are times where if the load order is bad enough, the game won't load.

Some other possible causes are missing master files and mod conflicts in general.

I suggest opening Wrye Bash and looking at your mod list. What color are the checkboxes next to the name of the mods? Ideally, they should all be green. If they're red, that means a major conflict or a missing master file.

Okay, I see one red. It is a compatibility patch for Vile Lair and [Harvest].
Could that be doing it?
*Wait, I don't have Vile Lair! Lol, I forgot about that for a second...*

**Still not the issue though**

Hmm. Well that certainly will cause a CTD, as loading a mod without having the master file present will cause it. Are you sure its the only one?

Try taking your INI file for Oblivion from its folder (It should be in "My Games") and then loading the Oblivion launcher and going to options/settings/whatever its called. It will detect your hardware and set your graphics for you just like it did the first time you opened it. Now launch Oblivion and see if that helped. I know I've had crashes in the past because of errors in my .ini file, but usually they're when loading a saved game. Still worth a try.

If that doesn't work my biggest suggestion is to do it the hard way and deactivate all your mods. Load Oblivion with no mods, and make sure it starts up. If its good, then its a mod related problem. Then go through your load order and load each set of mods one by one. Go for the bigger ones first, like OOO. Then load your game and see if it starts okay. Then on top of OOO, load something like Better Cities for example. Continue doing this until you get a crash. This is the 100% surefire way to pinpoint the problem, although it is a pain.

If you wanna speed things up a little you can even load multiple at a time. I would say load all your bigger mods such as OOO, Better Cities, etc etc, and try it. Then load the smaller mods one by one.

It works. I just deleted the ini, and now it works.
*woops, spoke too soon! It now will load, but the save game will not work now. Arggh. Well, now I guess I just have to go through every single mod.*
Thank you for all of your help.

CTD's on load are generally a result of the game looking for resources and/or .esp dependencies which are not there. Therefore if you have a .esp which is missing a master (Bash helpfully highlights this with red), you will CTD. Additionally, the improper installation/uninstallation of a UI mod can cause CTD's on load.

As is, I'd rerun the LATEST version of BOSS + list update, read ALL the warnings/comments on your installed mods that BOSS notates for you, and install and run the LATEST BASH (285) and rebuild your patch. If this sorts out the problem, great, if not, try regenerating your Oblivion.ini (rename the current one in your "My Games/Oblivion" directory to something else, then re-run the game and Oblivion will generate a new .ini for you).

Oh, congrats! I didn't really expect that to work. Do you have any UI mods installed? Or any mods that would edit the .ini?

Yep. I find this most commonly happens when people don't have/forget to tick the .esms for certain mods that require them, or .esps that are built for other .esps (patches, etc). I was a victim of this back when I was still fresh in the modding community, but I wizened up.

Then you probably don't have the fonts for it installed, but you had the ini changes pointing to them. Missing fonts will make the game CTD on start. In short, double check the install of dark UI.

If Oblivion crashes right when you start it, it will most probably be an missing Master File that is causing it.
Look for red marked Mods in Wrye Bash.

If you read the thread you'd notice that it wasn't missing master files in this case.

I just updated my bash patch, and took care of the filters. The game is still crashing, but now at the saves. It may be that I have to abandon my saves. I wasn't very far yet, so no loss, but still, annoying.
