PC: Dedicated Servers - Linux?

Post » Tue Oct 19, 2010 8:26 pm

just to clarify I have already pre-ordered - looking forward to playing :D - just wanted to know something:

Was wondering if the dedicated servers that have been confirmed will run on linux as well as windows - I host a dedicated server that runs on linux and would like to know if I can host servers - Its a win for the customer as game servers run better on linux and are incredibly easy to setup and run using tools like SRCDS - this will result in better performing servers for players and a larger choice of servers too. Its not a stretch to say that that ability to run servers on linux has contributed to the longevity of the mp portion of older games - such as CoD4/TF2/CSS.

I don't mind if they are not available at launch but I would rather be informed in advance rather then being told to "stay patient" only to find out a few months down the line that it was all just a ploy. I have learned to expect the worst when a PC developer says stay patient as it usually means they don't want to scare any potential customers away from the "ugly truth". Not going to name the specific games/developers/publishers but in the past few years several major PC FPS releases have been launched with the information regarding their servers shrouded in secrecy only to vanish into obscurity a matter of months later- if there won't ever be linux files then at least tell us in advance - I will assume a "no comment/stay patient" means bad news (sorry im a cynical bastard when it comes to this stuff :D - 1-2 publishers have lost my repeat business because of the sort of dishonesty I had just mentioned)

Since the tools are downloadable through Steam, it's doubtable?

not so steam/steam servers run on SRCDS (and usually work on linux too) for the following games:

It would be good if Linux server options are made available, if not at launch then soon after. Might even dust down our old server box if it was an option.

Disregard what I said then, I'm no expert in game servers.

They did say there would be Linux and Windows dedicated servers available, with customization et cetera et cetera.

I can't be bothered to find the source, but there definitely will be, yes.

On an unrelated note, this has been asked in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1181241-brink-fan-qa-submit-your-questions-now/ and topics continue to pop up when they've already been answered there, about just about everything.

I have looked at the questions thread and a few other places before making this thread - it was asked but not answered, would appreciate that source.

God i hope the server can run on dedi boxes with linux on, the supirior OS for any server. i've used windows based server for some multiplayers and its pants, play it long enough and then go onto linux and you notice a difference in hitreg, map rotation speed and general responsiveness of the game .

This game will be win on the Consoles and even better on PC.

Well it's kinda iffy. Brink is really heavy on the MP so one can assume that it will have lots of MP features, like Linux servers. But on the other hand Linux is quite niche when compared to other server options. Steam is the ruling server king on PC, and they usually try to add Linux in, but since it is made by SD and not directly by Valve (Which really integrates games onto steam) then it could be possible that Linux isnt in at all. And you have to remember that Linux might not have been a priority for the SD team...

So I'd say it is 70-30 in favor of Linux.

The lack of comment by SD despite so many people asking the same question tells me there will be no linux support. Hope I'm wrong but that's just how it looks.

tbh I am not getting at SD with this one - their linux support for ETQW was very strong and are generally willing to answer these sort of questions (before the game comes out too) - In this case it appears bethesda have told them they can't talk about it or are just ignoring the question.

after further investigation this QA with a developer says YES to linux server support
