What happens if the host quits mid-game?

Post » Wed Oct 20, 2010 12:28 pm

If the host quits, does the game migrate host? DOes it just end? Does it still record stats or achievement progress?

In between games, do players stay in a lobby? Is it like Battlefield BC2, where the next game instantly starts, or like Halo Reach, where you can drop out between games?

There is host migration, the cut-scenes for each map are shown before each match, so that is were people can drop out if they want, or just tweak their characters

I haven't heard/read much information about host migrations. I do know that there are no lobbies in Brink. I don't even know if there is necessarily a host in each game. I'm sure we will find out soon though. :D

There are dedicated servers, the only way you would get kicked out of a game because of the "host" leaving, would be if his internet went down and he was the one actually keeping the server up. Steam is going to offer a free dedicated stand-alone server tool. And of course for the people that don't have the internet speed to run their own server, places that sell servers for games like CS:S will also be selling these servers. I guess it comes down to what platform you're playing on too, you should mention that for a topic like this.

I hope they use host migration ala Call of Duty.

Call of Duty might be going downhill and fast, but it still has some good ideas for the rest of the FPS world.

Both. While the rest of the room is watching the cut scene, you can tweak your guns and character if you like.

And host migration was confirmed in an interview I posted ages ago, so that's definitely in. Would provide link, but I can't find it right now.

Not to be rude, but you should read the entire post, I clearly said that they are for the PC and that for a question like this he needed to specify which system it's on, but thank you for stating the obvious

random question... once you set your characters weight, can you change that on the fly as well, or is it set in stone per character you create?

Its p2p on consoles, player with most bandwidth = host. If they leave it cycles to the next highest player, etc. Hopefully it will actually migrate instead of just kicking everyone like a certain game that I wont mention...

Is there a difference in the p2p for XBOX360 and PS3? assumed they worked in a similar fashion.

I just read an article about that talked about this. It has a very, very clever match making system.

Really? Where did you say that? The closest you come to saying "PC" is "Steam is going to offer a free dedicated stand-alone server tool." Which isn't clearly saying it, and doesn't actually exclude consoles.

Probably the ping between the players.

That's the only really relevant part anyway. DL and UL speeds aren't the primary concern for gaming.

And if your connection speed is an issue, then it will tend to make your ping higher as more people join.

Host in P2P is usually decided by lowest average ping, as that is the person roughly in the center of all the players.

You can change it at any time, but not during a game. You have to leave the game and change it on the main menu.
