Two Handed Guns

Post » Wed Oct 27, 2010 5:38 pm

Dispite how slow magic moves through the air the fact that it will always fly straight no matter the wind, will not be effected by gravity, more or less completely silent, no kick, and doesn't have a maximum range sounds like a snipers dream come true. We all know there will be a few people who wish for TES to have guns, but the fact is that they all ready are in. Just not in the same form as our guns. Tamriel's guns fire magic. Load the energy from a soul gem, fire from the staff till it runs out of energy, then reload. That sounds like I gun to me.

I'm not saying we should get rid of staffs and make them into our gun knock offs. I'd like to see one handed staffs work much much the same as Oblivions, by firing from the hip. But in the 200 years, a simple new design for a staff could have come to light. A few people want to see technology advance, right? Well, with the ability to enchant arrows and bows, the need to advance farther in that field wouldn't be needed much. Crossbows would be the next step there...but I'd rather not get into that here.

What I'm sugesting would be a two handed staff that one held like a musket. A longer range staff, one where you can look down it to see where you're shooting. It could shoot higher damage dealing hits, but then would fire slower. The speed of the shot would remain the same as with any other magic attack.

Thoughts?

Tamriel's guns do not fire magic. Tamirel's Staves cast magic. Tamriel's mages cast magic. As long as we have crosshairs we dont need "sights" for staves. Dual wielding staves is a maybe.

I thought the entire point ,with all the trouble in Thamriel, was that technology had regressed since Oblivion. And with a single mages guild being replaced by two opposing factions, surely magical research would have suffered too.

Well you'd be wrong. I hate the idea of guns that fire bullets. Seriously, staffs all ready are guns. Just change how ya hold em and its a gun.

Tamriel's guns do not fire magic. Tamirel's Staves cast magic. Tamriel's mages cast magic. As long as we have crosshairs we dont need "sights" for staves. Dual wielding staves is a maybe.

Like I said, if ya held the staff different it would then work a lot like a gun. And I hate crosshairs as it is. You shouldn't know where you're arrow's exactly going to go like that. And firing magic with a staff from the hip at long range targets sounds ungodly hard. As long as its there, you're right. You wouldn't need to. The crosshairs on a bow at least make sense, cause you have to at least aim first before shooting. The the staff its just a quickdraw that works every time without fail. I'd rather not have it that way.

I don't think it'd fit too well in Skyrim, but something like this could be a cool thing to see in another game in a more magic-focused area like Summerset, as a sign that we're not in our familiar empire anymore. They're said to have magic fire launchers on their ships, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch (maybe we could see those going up against those Redguard cannons that people keep bringing up).

I could see that. It definitly would fit better in Summerset, maybe we'll finally see it next time? :P But ya, Skyrim would be more rugged...maybe two rugged for a two handed staff like this. Its not like I really really want to see these in game, it would just be a happy medium between the few people who want guns and everyone else who is about to flame me in about 5 seconds.

NO guns. Go mod yourself some ones if you want, or go play Halo.

Interesting, because like I said there all ready are guns. No need for me to add em if they're all ready there. All I'm sugesting is a staff you hold differently, not sure why that's so revolutionary and evil.

I am so glad that you have nothing whatsoever to do with the development of this game.

Is this even a serious suggestion???

I still don't see much point in Oblivion's implementation of staves: effectively infinitely reusable scrolls that took up your equipment slots and let you spam the same one spell over and over. Kind of like Flare. Personally, I'd like staves in Skyrim to be wieldable as a melee weapon like Morrowind's, but also perhaps capable of adding additional effects to or amplifying spells you cast through them. As opposed to them being a separate source of spellcasting in their own right.

The OP's post just screams "make staves look more like guns" to me though.

Read my friend. A staff all ready is a gun. Ya fire it till you run out of ammo, recharge or reload the staff with energy, and then start again. I dont really care one way or the other on this idea, but it would make a happy medium for the few who want guns and those who don't. Like its been said, this fits something more from Summerset Isles than skyrim, but its still an idea that should be considered.

And its not another gun post, because I actually came up with a way for it to make sense in the world. Holding a staff like a pool que to make sure ya hit what you're amming for is evil, but quick drawing the staff from your side is okay. I really don't see how that makes any kind of sense.

I am so glad that you have nothing whatsoever to do with the development of this game.

Is this even a serious suggestion???

Forgive me, I'll go make a crossbow/spear thread now so I can contribute...wait...

Actually up until Oblivion enchanted items used to recharge on their own as well. So does that make them coil guns, or...? :P

The posts responding negatively are indicative of the dirty, "Don't bother to read or consider the original post and just spout negativity and slurs like a buffoon", population. :P

Oblivion staves were basically 'magic cannons' that fired rapidly and accurately at long ranges. You also had to reload them. The OP is correct.

I would not mind being able to use the 'iron sights' on the staff for aiming because you can already do that with bows.

Heh, beats me. That kind of tech isn't even in Fallout. It kind of was in Fallout NV with the recharger rifle, but it was a fail gun in my opinion. :P And people don't want technology in TES...hah.

The crosshairs on a bow at least make sense, cause you have to at least aim first before shooting.

I'm sorry, did I hear you correctly? :teehee:
Only game I remember doing this(if I remember correctly) was Dark Messiah, and it felt weird.

I could actually dig the whole magic shooting out faster through a staff. I like that.
