If you can't block while being a spell/sword....

...maybe we can parry by swinging at the oponent's sword?

thw would be cool.

edit: if there are directionnal attacks, meybe even swinging egainst the oponen'ts blow would create a block.

makes more sense that stopping a two handed mace by putting your katana in front of it...

I like the idea of being able to parry. Maybe that could be a perk that could be chosen at a certain level.

i was under the impression you could only block with shields and 2handers  i know i either read it in a magazine or heard it on a podcast or something i certainly didnt dream it up, but im almost positive they said you can only block with shields and 2handers

As the game is coded right now, you cannot block with dual weapons. With a 1h + shield, one button acts directly as that hands control, so one button controls the shield. With the 2h, both buttons are being used for a single weapon, so they can allow one to be defensive. With dual tools (spell + sword, sword + sword) each button is assigned to attack/cast. Only way I could see blocking added is to add an additional button that specifically blocks.

Using attacks to parry would be a nice way to circumvent the button problem

It's not that they said that you can ONLY block with shields and two-handed weapons, it just that those are the only things mentioned in the http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/01/24/skyrim-building-better-combat.aspx

So... absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. We just don't know for sure at this point.

Players can block and bash with two-handed weapons as well, but it isn't as effective as the shield. Warriors who prefer the sword-and-shield approach can increase their defensive capabilities with shield perks that give them elemental protection from spells.

Also, remember guys, shields are both offensive and defensive in this game now. A quick tap acts as a defensive move, while holding it causes you to execute a shield bash. That means the shield already has a notable advantage, protecting and staggering, while boosting defense, and offering resistances (from perks)

There may not be a block button per se, if youre using spell in one hand and sword in the other. But I'd be shocked if a well timed strike wouldn't parry the opponents blow. I think were all making a big deal out of nothing.

I could believe in parrying, and even if it isnt added, staggering is suppose to be more common, so just make sure you hit them before they hit you. Parrying could in some cases be more effective than a shield, and notably more effective than holding your sword sideways.
