Politics of Tamriel

Like I said, the option to become emperor should still exist, as long as you have something to do after you become it.

All of this exists in the Elder Council mod by Giskard.

The Elder Council looks really nice. It's been over two years now I think, couldn't we just set aside those differences of the past? :(
I don't even remember what the problem was (don't want to be reminded either, though).

By the way, I understand his readme in the way that his mod will end with Titus Mede becoming the Emperor. Maybe I've missed a section about becoming the Emperor, I know that used to be a feature... maybe it's still a feature, but you'll be succeeded by Mede eventually? :shrug:

I don't believe the TEC mod has an option to become the emperor. There was/is a mod that is an unofficial add-on to TEC that allowed did that and, as I recall, was not supported by the author of TEC.

I could be wrong about that though.

I agree that being Emperor would be either boring (mooooore paperwork) or very fantasy-like (everything is just dandy know, I'ma go buy me a shiny crown!) or just unrealistic (they let the emperor wander around the forests alone? Really? Really?). What does strike me as a realistic career for the Champion as emperor goes as follows: Get elected. Die. The process by which you travel from election to death could take a variety of paths, but for sake of playablility, it should probably be short, like: I was named Emperor, a toast was held in my honor, the wine was poisoned. Or, I was named Emperor, Ocato stood up and [shot me with a death ray].

Honestly, I don't think the counts would be happy with the Champion as emperor. My Champion is an unwashed, barely literate Khajiti thief; who wants that as Emperor, really? Elsweyr and Blackmarsh might not mind (might not - Elsweyr, for one, has its own moon-lit politics, and might prefer seceding over gaining power in the Empire) but bet that Morrowind would, and none of the Cyrodiil counts would be thrilled either. Like I say, barely literate, and no experience governing. Not who you'd elect as [President], no matter how much you loved his [western B movies]. Even the most educated of mages would be a rather unlikely candidate for holding together an already very strained Empire.

One possibility is to set it up so that, whatever choice you make (after some already-difficult moral quandaries), Titus Mede ups and invades shortly thereafter. The Champion of Cyrodiil could instantly become a wanted [man], safe only in one or two "home towns" he was allied with just before the war began. Or in none, but welcomed in refugee camps camps and hideouts everywhere. A Resistance might be mounted and led, but I'm not sure where you could go from that point. Alternatively, the Champion might be approached shortly before the invasion by Mede's messengers - offering a way out, if only the Champion will support Titus once in power, if only the Champion stabs his new Emperor in the back. Literally.

Yet another possibility is to force the player to go through more than one attempt at promoting an Emperor. You pick a candidate, you crown him, he gets killed, you squash the people who are (maybe) responsible, you pick another candidate and get him elected (harder second time around), he gets killed too. Then Titus invades, and pats you on the head for upsetting the political scene so nicely for him to step in.

I like the idea that your race would influence the possibilities open to you. (Well, it would!) And I like the idea of pulling different factions into it. On a similar note, I have previously heard longing pleas for conflict between the Thieves' Guild and the Dark Brotherhood, the Fighters' Guild and the Blackwood Company, Mages and Necromancers. I think there is a possibility to work some of that into this.

I really like what Fearabbit has said on all this, and I liked what someone else voiced earlier: "And they all lived uneasily ever after."

this is (one of the many things) Oblivion needs. but please don't make it "work in conjunction with TEC" , do your own thing.

If creating such a mod (or bunch of mods), I would start by writing down a structured overview of the forces at play. Something like ...

-------------------------
Faction: County of Skingrad
Leader: Count Janus Hassildor, Countess Rona Hassildor (in case of Janus' death), Hal-Liurz (in case both aren't available)
Noble Families: Hassildor (current counts, two members), others unknown.
Military commander (if any): Danus Artellian, second-in-command: unknown
Settlements:
* Brindle Home
* Gottlesfont

Forts:
* Dirich
* Wooden Hand
* Vlastarus
* Roebeck
* Black Boot

Mines and other natural resources:
* Cursed Mine (Silver)
* Derelict Mine (Silver)

Problems:
The count and countess are both vampires. As such, their mobility is rather limited. They also aren't capable of producing a heir. Both could mean chaos if their condition should be made public, or if they had to disappear leaving no-one to lead the County. Additionally, high-ranking Mage Guild members are aware of their problem, though they prefer to keep quiet about it due to mutual interests - for now.

Opportunities:
After the fall of Kvatch, all three counties surrounding the lands - Skingrad, Anvil and Chorrol - are eyeing the others for any signs of a land grab, as well as preparing such themselves. Both a direct takeover of settlements and forts seem possible, as well as installing a willing "puppet" from distant family branches of the late count of Kvatch.

Enemies:
Vampire clans (personal vendetta against the count), potentially counts of Chorrol and Anvil (over the county of Kvatch)

Allies:
Mage Guild - though after the recent leadership change, this might change as well.
-------------------------
Add in some details about military strength, economic situation and more of the problems/opportunities, and you're getting somewhere.

As a side note, Google Wave works great for collaborative brainstorming, work creation and documentation.

If you use the UL mod SKINGRAD OUTSKIRTS, there is at least one more fort.

I love this idea. I'd love to be involved in it if I could. I'm no modder (thought I've always wanted to learn, just haven't took the time) but I do know a bit about TES lore regarding this concept. It's been a while, but I can definitely do more research, and I have some of my own ideas to implement into it, if they were wanted. I've been wanting to get some political stuff into Oblivion for years, now, and I hope someone picks this up. If they do, let me know, and I'll do what I can.

Forts:
* Dirich

Who stole my nick? :/

Great concept.
I've read many very interesting ideas as how things could be before the final choice, but what I really think is important is that, if an "I become emperor" option exists, you gotta be able to do something with it.
When TES3 was being still developed, bethesda promised political games and to be able to climb up to the highest rank in a guild and then do something with it. Beth never delivered, and it's kind of pointless to be the head of something but with the power to do nothing.
Give us option to administer Tamriel (aka Cyrodil at least).

Altough being emperor is kind of overkill and probably would be simpler to let us administer a guild then an empire (emperor = too much power, very few possible enemies - and they get killed for sure because of treason if they are caught).

Amen.

Let me add my voice to the "don't let the PC become emperor" crowd (sorry Dirich, I'm just using you as a handy quote - nothing personal :)).

I had some really cool ideas about becoming guild head, but it got so far out of hand that I decided to split it off into another thread. Thanks for the inspiration. :D

*sigh* Since I can't edit my own posts (WTF?) I had to repost. Anyway, some of the ideas I came up with would be better suited for this, so here they are:

FG: Stave off an invading force from another province; more manpower to bolster a county lord's forces; a visiting dignitary needs more guards.

DB: Assassins. Duh.

TG: Someone wants to steal important documents/heirloom, spy on XYZ person, etc.

MG: The necromancers take the opportunity to arise. You have to decide whether to reabsorb them into the guild (thus largely negating their threat) or fight them. Maybe a rogue mage gains enough power that he becomes a threat (though whether or not he actually is, is another story - is he someone like Mannimarco, or is he simply happy to putter around in his tower making potions and someone just wants to get rid of him for his research? <_< )

There is some secret society, whose name I cannot remember for the live of me, seeks to put someone stronger on the throne. They are basically disciples of Tiber Septim, or at least peg themselves as such. But anyway, they felt that Uriel Septim was a very weak individual and were probably behind his previous assassination attempts. So these guys would definitely be vying for the throne at this point in time. I'll see if I can't dig up more info on them.

Edit: They're more of a cult than a secret society... but they are certainly secret.

Could be very good indeed. Just what Oblivion needs, plotlines for advlts not toddlers.
I'd suggest some background reading. Look at the history of the Roman Empire post Octavian (Augustus). From this time till it fell, Rome's enemy was Rome and it's inability to handle succession issues, and there were many. Could give you a lot of ideas.
If you can find it, I'd recommend the book of the excellent BBC series the Cleopatras (There were loads of them, not just Cleopatra VII everybody knows about). The politics practiced by 'King Pot Belly the Good' are amazing! Failing that, a study of ptolemaic Egypt would be useful.

I would absolutely love to play a mod like this. Though as for the player being emperor - I'm already Sheogorath, why would I want to be emperor too? At least as a daedric prince I get to have a little fun, but as emperor I get to... Sit on a fancy chair and fill out paperwork.
