Black Nights... Just a little TOO dark

Post » Sun Nov 14, 2010 5:11 pm

Basically, the problem is simple. At night, everything is completely, 100% black. Without a torch, I literally cannot see my own character. The first obvious culprit was All Natural, but I checked the night settings, and when they're set to vanilla or darker nights, there's no difference. Just 100% black. It creates an interesting, and arguably realistic effect, but personally I just find it really annoying, and I want to fix it.

Here's my load order, so says wyre bash. It was mostly decided by BOSS, but I made a couple of optional changes, namely putting LAME before Supreme Magicka, and moving my animation replacers to after Bashed path (they weren't working otherwise).

The Real Lights component of All Natural might have a lot to do with it. Is it still pitch black when there is a full moon?

yep, when I first got out of the sewer there was a full moon, but it was still pitch black. I'll try disabling real lights - I'd been considering disabling for a while now, what with the lag it causes.

Well the real lights compnonent doesn't actually change ambience levels as far as i know so it should not really affect nights outside. What it changes are light sources, it removes fake light sources and turns all light sources that didn't actually give light into real light sources, this means some interiors will be darker where there are no light sources and some places will actually become brighter beacue all the light sources now actually light up. The darker nights part in .ini will change ambient lighting outside though. If it's not changing there is something wrong, make sure you are suing latest version.

Also there is one cloudy weather type from the weather portion of all natural that does make the nights really dark but yeah i think something is messed up if you are using vanilla night ambience and its always pitch black at nights.

Well turning off real lights didn't change a thing. I'm using All Natural v. 0.9.9.5, with the fix pack. There's definitely something messed up, but what's causing it? How do I fix it?

I'm not sure that just "turning off" Real Lights is a good enough test. From the readme:

III. Uninstallation

To safely uninstall All Natural, follow these instructions:

1.Open the console and type in “fw 38EEE” (without quotes). This will change the weather to “Clear”.
2.Immediately save in a new slot, and exit the game.
3.Remove all All Natural files (All Natural.bsa, All Natural Base.esm, All Natural.ini, All Natural Readme.doc, and any optional All Natural plugins installed).
4.Load, then save in a second new slot.

Well I didn't shut off All Natural entirely, just real lights. Honestly, for what All Natural adds, I can put up with a little darkness at night, so if that's the culprit, I guess I'll just have to live with it. But, a lot of people use All Natural without this problem, so it has to conflicting with something else.

Could you snap some screenshots? With torch, without torch, looking at the sky, etc etc. Just curious to see exactly how dark we're talking here while the sky is still bright.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i180/candlemaster/ScreenDay.jpg a screen of a random, day-time landscape scene.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i180/candlemaster/ScreenNight.jpg the same scene at night (with torch).

Without a torch, my character would be completely black, and you would not be able to see her at all. Note that you can clearly see the stars in the sky - If I had turned around, you'd be able to see the moon as well. Other than that, everything is total blackness.

There's only one thing I can think of.
IIRC the ini file changed between 0.9.9.5 and the fixed version.
Can you check if your settings are using these variables?
; =====================================================; | Night Luminance : Configurable night light levels |; =====================================================; For Tamriel:Set ANInitQuest.NLLuminance to 0.2 ; Multiplier of the brightness at night.Set ANInitQuest.NLNormalizeLuminance to 1 ; Enables/Disables the removal of vanilla Oblivion's blue tint at night.; For the Shivering Isles:Set ANSIInitQuest.NLLuminance to 0.2 ; Multiplier of the brightness at night.Set ANSIInitQuest.NLNormalizeLuminance to 1 ; Enables/Disables the removal of vanilla Oblivion's blue tint at night.

The older variables were:
set ANInitQuest.ENEnabled to 1 ; Enable/Disable Enhanced Nights. (0)Set ANInitQuest.ENDarknessParameter to 0.25 ; Multiplier of the brightness at night.Set ANInitQuest.ENNormalizeNightAmbient to 1 ; Enables/Disables vanilla's blue tint at night.Set ANInitQuest.ENNormalizeParameter to 15 ; If above is 0, set to 0. If above is 1, set to (DarknessParameter * 60).

Definitely sounds like what Julianig is saying, you have your Luminance set to 0 in the ini. Real lights does nothing at all to the brightness at night, it only removes light that had no light source.

It seems I have the wrong version of the fixed version lol. I just checked out the "all natural.ini" in the fixed version archive, but it has the structure julianig described as "the older variables". Could I get a link to the latest fixed version?

I've just checked, and the ini file in the "http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18305" on TESNexus is correct. :)

Well that's the one I'm using. Here's my settings:

;Tamriel:set ANInitQuest.ENEnabled to 1 ; Enable/Disable Enhanced Nights. (0)Set ANInitQuest.ENDarknessParameter to 0.5 ; Multiplier of the brightness at night.Set ANInitQuest.ENNormalizeNightAmbient to 1 ; Enables/Disables vanilla's blue tint at night.Set ANInitQuest.ENNormalizeParameter to 30 ; If above is 0, set to 0. If above is 1, set to (DarknessParameter * 60).;Shivering Isles:set ANSIInitQuest.ENEnabled to 1 ; Enable/Disable Enhanced Nights for SI (0)Set ANSIInitQuest.ENDarknessParameter to 0.5 ; Multiplier of the brightness at night.Set ANSIInitQuest.ENNormalizeNightAmbient to 1 ; Enable/Disable vanilla's blue tint at night.Set ANSIInitQuest.ENNormalizeParameter to	53 ; If above is 0, set to 0. If above is 1, set to (DarknessParameter * 106).

Did you install everything from the fixpack, including the new ini? Those ini settings should not be there at all. If you look at Julianig's previous post you see what you have there and what you should have.
