First thing I noticed is that he is left handed. Sword in left hand, dagger in right. Also, pauldron is on the right side, meaning that is the side to face the enemy in a defensive stance.

I think that it was just an accident and that it really doesn't have to do anything with any kind of creatures.
Also, I believe that reason why they look alike is just that they have 'copy/pasted' the smoke or an accident.
Only flaw, in my opinion, is that on upper left part since it look really unnatural.
