Looking for lightweight mods

Post » Mon Dec 06, 2010 9:37 am

Hello everyone, I'd like to know of any good lightweight mods you may know about.

What I mean by lightweight is that they don't require anything like OBSE or OBMM (I tried that out and wasted many hours trying to get my game to work).

I'll take any mod you think is good, I don't care what category of mod it is (Quest, UI changes, etc.)

Thanks in advance! (FYI I only have the UOP installed in terms of mods)

1. You can get some 'simple' mods, but still you need to use OBMM or Wrye Bash to manage them. They're needed for checking/adjusting load order(it's important), install mods packaged as OMOD or BAIN(some mods are only available as OMOD package... BAIN package can be manually installed if you know how to do), and do some other things like archive invalidation, managing your save files, and so on.

2. For starter, getting some simple house mods would be good(However, do not forget to read the requirements). Usually they can work regardless of loading order, unless other mod changes the same area where house is. And you will need storage anyway if you have many loots. Of course, it's recommended to make them to be loaded after UOP.(Again, you need OBMM to do that, though the file date will make UOP load before others)

I've been trying to help two friends get started into playing mods for Oblivion recently, and it can be overwhelming at first.

You said you already have the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5296 which is always a good place to start. There is also a http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27710 to fix things that were left after the main file was no longer maintained. You should also pick up the http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10739 and the http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9969 if you have those.

Another good starting one would be http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13536. This one makes your quest rewards upgrade themselves once you reach the appropriate level.

After those most of the others that I have require at least OBSE or OBMM, if not Wrye Bash and BOSS on top of those. I would recommend trying to get into these again later once you feel more comfortable with the processes.

The only other relatively basic mods I have are http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19782 which is a fun mod to make the Fighter's Guild members wear a common uniform to be more easily identifiable, and then http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1797 and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1809 are great if you play a Khajiit or a Vampire.

Hopefully once you get more familiar with things you will start to get into the more advanced mods because trust me they're a lot more fun :-)

Hope this helps a little bit at least.

Preparing for Mods - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/index.php?page=preparing_for_mods
OBMM - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/index.php?page=obmm
OMOD Installation - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/index.php?page=omod_installation

If you have any questions at all about the setup steps, please ask. Setting up OBMM should not be difficult at all. However, you are running Win7 or Vista, reinstalling the game outside of the default folder, Program Files (i.e., to C:\Games) would help tremendously.

What I mean by lightweight is that they don't require anything like OBSE or OBMM (I tried that out and wasted many hours trying to get my game to work).

As said already; you will REALLY want either (or both) OBMM or Wyre Bash for any modded game.
For load order, which will quickly become important for game stability.
As well as for installing any mod, even "lightweight" ones, in a fashion by which they can also easily be removed properly.
And both handle archive validation. Which you don't have to understand beyond the fact that some things, even simple ones simply will not work (properly or at all) without it.

OBSE is a very powerful tool, as it's name implies it extends the script functions far beyond those of Oblivion's original functionality. This allows for a lot of cool stuff, and some of the best stuff too! It is a simple install and forget application as well. All it requires is that you then run the game through it. The best two ways to do this, rather than creating your own link are:
1. Through Wrye Bash (that again!) or,
2. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27672

With either all you need (once they are installed and set up) is to find and check the checkbox that says you are using OBSE, and the game will be launched through OBSE for you every time from then on.
And then you won't be limited to non-OBSE mods.

Neither OBMM or OBSE should stop your game from working, at all.

I'll take any mod you think is good, I don't care what category of mod it is (Quest, UI changes, etc.)

Thanks in advance! (FYI I only have the UOP installed in terms of mods)

As said; get the UOP supplemental patch (it is the continuation of the original, and is very well done by someone well known for getting it right.) As well as any unofficial patches for any DLCs you have.
Beyond that the world is your oyster, what do you want out of the game?
Want it to look prettier? More detailed?
Wanting more that the original (vanilla) quests?
More of a challenge? An easier ride?
Dissatisfaction with certain aspects?...

There are plenty of threads etc. on suggested mods, as well as plenty to look through on TESNexus etc. Just look around and have fun seeing what you might be interested in.
