No Polearms?

Post » Wed Dec 08, 2010 6:11 pm

i was listening to a podcast with todd howard on gameinformer and the first question asked was will there be spears in the game and todd said no. so skyrim happens in a land in the north with snow and dragons and all that kind of stuff, how ridicilus can it be to disregard polearms here? this is the kind of place where polearms such as the spear were used the most (back in the iceage)

just had to post my disappointment over this =(

I'm paraphrashing here, but he said, "There are no spears, in the traditional sense."

There've been a thousand million "no spears" threads, but polearms were more or less confirmed in PC Gamer magazine.

He said something like "No spears, not in the traditional sense, at this stage."

Spear = polearm. Yes a spear is a type of polearm, HOWEVER polearm does not = spear there are SO many different polearms than the spear. Bo staff, lance(would be cool but probably not in the game), halberd, glaive, pike, sarissa, trident, corseque, long axes (axes are in the game, why not things like a sparth?), nagamaki... to name a few. Some of these weapons might even turn up under the guise of 2-handed weapons. Who knows?

The point is that they'd be wielded very differently - spears are pretty much exclusively a thrusting weapon with great reach, whereas a halberd, glaive, or the like could be used with a two-handed slashing motion; potentially sharing animation resources with staffs, long axes, etc.

Halberds have gone under the Spear catagory for Morrowind.

Meh, quite honestly, I don't even use spears that much in Morrowind. There cool and all, but I usually go with a sword.

Entirely different animations. Halberds and glaives are chopping weapons, spears are stabbing weapons. Seems like a perfectly adequate reason to have one but not the other.

And yes, there was that whole "not in the traditional spear sense" comment, and at least one magazine mention of polearms, which makes it a bit early for blanket statements.

I'm confused, we've confirmed polearms are in but spears so far are not?

Spears are a form of polearms, the most basic and often used form. I believe it was the first type of weapon ever invented, even cavemen would make a sharp stick and use it as a spear.

No spears, so we'll see what? Pikes, glaives and halberds? Pikes and halberds are basically spears with other forms of blades on them as well, so this information is definately either an error or very confusing.

Read the post right above yours. S/he explains why halberds would be easier to implement than spears. Thus why halberds are more likely to be in the game than spears.

Neither have technically been confirmed but in a screenshot of the Draugr you can see a pole weapon being used(most likely an axe) so that's pretty conclusive that they're in. We will not likely see spears though.

Spears are polearms indeed, but they are their own animal. Very few if any other polearms are used like spears. Other polearms can be swung horizontal/vertically while a spear is basically only good for thrusting.

Yes we'll likely see staves, halberds, poleaxes and the like. Which are in no-way similar to spears, other than being polearms.

Polearms have been confirmed. A magazine specificly had a chart that had polearms on them. The problem with spears is that they are a thrusting/stabbing weapon only. It has been said that its hard to animate properly without it looking bad. It was also not balanced well in Morrowind. With that said other polearms that are more chopping weapons and much more feasable weapon for animation and for use in game.

Im just happy a form of pole arms are in. Oblivion felt strange without a more staff type non magic weapon.

Even if they're not in, I'm sure your disappointment will be softened by all the other great features Skyrim will have. Think of it this way; if they're not in, Bethesda had a reason for not putting them in. Probably to make lots of other stuff better. Or maybe because they couldn't be bothered. Most likely the latter.

They still could be in though, who knows?
