Could Elder Scroll 5 Skyrim have mods for the console?

Post » Mon Dec 13, 2010 4:32 am

Wouldn't it be awesome if the Elder Scroll 5 Skyrim developers made it possible for moder's to make a mod for the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 versions?

It would be cool if the moder's could send their mods to the developers and then the developers could put the mod in a downloadable expansion pack for Xbox 360, PC and PS3 versions. It would be awesome because the developers could fix bugs faster than the moder's and the mods would be a lot more enjoyable with less bugs. The mods would add a lot more replay value to the PC and console versions. The developers could selling the mods in a downloadable expansion pack for PC and console versions. The moder's could then get a little bit of money for making the mods, but I don't know how much money the moder's would or should get. I've seen some of the Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion mods for the PC and I really want to play some of those mods in the game. I'm unable play Oblivion on my laptop or my desktop and I don't have enough money to buy a new PC so I can play Oblivion with those mods I want so badly. I have Oblivion on Xbox 360 and I want the Elder Scroll 5 Xbox 360 version to have some of the mods that will be made for the PC version by moder's.

Would it be cool if the developers made a poll

If they do make this possible it would be awesome!

Nope. They've already confirmed there will not be mods for the consoles. PC only.

edit: There's a huge list of technical and legal reasons why it can't be done. But in short, it's a resounding NO.

You can only mod on PC.
Therefore you can't send mods to a console.

But if Bethesda makes content and puts it on a DLC then that's a different story.

They SHOULD, yes, but they won't. It's disappointing; apparently it can't be done. I don't see why it can't, as Beth put the official mods on consoles no problem, but w/e. It's not as if the consoles are worried about letting users access user-created content; if so, Little Big planet, Halo Reach, Black ops, Far cry 2, and Guitar hero world tour wouldn't have been able to make it on to consoles, but they did. I guess the only reason I can possibly think of is that MS/Sony are worried about mods that would fry the systems.

I would at leas enjoy a system where Beth picks their favorite mods say, every month, and with the creators permission allows console users to access them free of charge (think Halo 3's Bungie favorites).

Why can't they take a mod on PC and put it on a console?
What technical problems stops this from happening?

What if they can fix the mod so it doesn't hurt the console?

The bolded part is almost there.

There's a HUGE difference between the mods made with the Construction Set/Creation Kit/GECK and the simple maps made with the games you mentioned.

With Little Big Planet and Halo's Forge and Farcry 2's map builders, you take pre-existing parts and items and place them on a map over which you only have basic control of. These maps are then loaded separately as needed.

With Bethesda's editors, you can landscape, place stuff (spawns, items, objects, buildings, terrains, NPCs, triggers, etc), create dialogue, script and create new stuff as needed. These mods are then intergrated into the main game, not as a separate entity.

In order to bring these mods to console users, Bethesda would need to review, sort, test, bug fix, test, port, test and finally package the mods into a format that the consoles can use. (Thus consuming cash, time and personnel) AND THEN they'd submit them to Microsoft and Sony for them to test.

There's way too much to be done and considering a bad or conflicting mod can break the game, can you inagine trying to troubleshoot on the closed file system of a console?

First off....modding is a community, so they would NEVER be paid. Second its not up to bethesda to release mods to consoles, its sonys and Microsofts. So it will never happen. /goodbye

It has been confirmed that the Creation Kit and user made mods will only be for the pc.

We like seeing the mods that are made by the community, but we have no plans to make them available as official releases.

Similar to Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3, the tools for Skyrim are PC only. There's no plans to release a version of the Creation Kit on consoles. If you're into modding, we suggest you go for the PC version.

These topics never go anywhere good so I am closing it.
