Need a bit of assistance with mods

Post » Mon Dec 13, 2010 1:21 pm

Just bought the game for the PC, and I'm trying to download mods. I've followed instructions I've looked up, I've extracted the files to the Oblivion folder. The issue is that the mods aren't appearing in the load order screen or whatever, and I'm not too sure why. If anyone must know, the way I did it was..

Download file to desktop
Copy and paste to Oblivion after extracting it there, just to be sure
And that's pretty much it.

It can't be too difficult, can it?

Maybe try using OBMM (Oblivion Mod Manager) instead - available from the TES Nexus, and probably other places. After a clean uninstall, and fresh install (patched with the latest official patch from the Bethesda website, either for straight Oblivion if you don't have Shivering Isles, or the SI version if you do).

Many mods come pre-packaged as OMODs (the file format OBMM deals with) but you can also make your own with ease, from folders or archives (e.g., 7z, rar or zip files).

Hope that helps.

I should go with Oblivion Mod Manager.. Same thing was going on with Fallout when I refused to use FOMM. I actually didn't know there was an OBMM :P

Yes OBMM and Wrye Bash, if you just unzipped the files and put them directly into your Oblivion folder that is always the first mistake. Because if the creator put the files in in an odd format say by adding mod name\data then the game will not see it, it would look like this Oblivion\data\Jack\Data\***.Esp instead of Oblivion\Data\***.Esp. When downloading the files if you go with either or both wrye bash or OBMM then download for that installer I use both but prefer OBMM for install. Some prefer Wrye Bash. Now to do a quick fix figure out what you did, example is if you only had an esp and a txt file then that mod should show up if the esp was put directly into the data folder if not it will not work. Also if you have Win 7 you have even more problems if you installed Oblivion into the Program Files Folder, you will need to do an uninstall and install it outside of the program files directory. But that is only if you have Win 7.

What mods did you download? Some mods, like texture replacements, don't have an esp and therefore don't appear in the load order.

I only got two, Playable Dremora and Playable Dremora/Legion Armor & Clothes. They both have ESPs.

ALSO I do have Windows 7, but from past experiences with FO3 I remembered not to install it in Program Folders. I saved it in the 'my documents' section.

Is your game patched to the latest version, and what operating system are you running? If you are running Win7 or Vista, reinstall the game to C:\Games\Bethesda Softworks, in order to save yourself some trouble.

It has to be patched just to use mods? And do you mean like what computer am I running, or what? And, the game is already showing up in the Bethesda Softworks games area as it is, i think I could skip that part.

No, no. What version of Oblivion do you have: original retail, GOTY or some Steam version? The game's version number is displayed at the bottom of the screen as you launch it. Is that number 1.2.0416? If not, you need to install the latest official patch: http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm

I have GOTY. I just launched it, the number was different than what you said. So I guess I should download the patch, and when I do it will change to that number or something?

No. The GOTY edition shoul... Did you install disc 2? Why don't you go ahead and do that. Disc 2 patches the game to the latest version.

Haha, that is the first time I have heard that one... Install it, and that should take care of the version number/patch requirement for your mods, especially OBSE and its dependents.

Downloaded the packs, but I can't get the mods up on OBMM from the load button. I can do 'create' and add the archive and file, but if I try activating it the thing says it's an invalid plugin. What now?

What is an invalid plugin?

Edit: Please, be specific about which mod you are talking about.

You don't know what a plugin is..? A plugin is a mod/DLC. It's showing up as invalid, and that's for both mods, as well.

I meant, which mod was OBMM giving the error for. I definitely know what a plugin is after using mods for three years. That was very careless wording on my part.

Sorry, edited my post pretty much after you posted. Both mods are showing up invalid.

Documents is protected by the UAC, isn't it...??

Wait, you should not be adding anything other than the archive to the OMOD. Do not add the archive and the extracted files.

OBMM - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/index.php?page=obmm <-- set BSA Redirection (Utilities (sidebar) > Archive Invalidation)
OMOD Installation - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/index.php?page=omod_installation <-- I am not quite sure about what you are doing

What is the name of one of the mods that you are trying to put into an OMOD that is failing? I need to be on the exact same page as you are. What files do you see in the Plugins frame, and what files do you see in the 'Data Files' frame?

I already posted the mods but I guess you're asking for a link.

Well if you package the mods wrong they will not work, if the mod contains omod conversion data it will be hard to mess up, but you need to have the proper folder structure before creating an omod.
