Pc Version: Security ?'s

Post » Sat Dec 18, 2010 7:08 am

I was torn on whether I wanted to get this on my PC or PS3 until the security fiasco with PS3. I know that all versions are supposed to be very similar. My final decision will come down to whether or not "Brink" will be completely overrun by hackers on the PC. The past few Shooters that I have picked up on PC and Loved have been ruined by all the Cheaters out there. I know its a big issue with both consoles and PC's but I've noticed it much more on my PC. I'm hoping that if it's not using the EA servers and it's a slightly smaller developer that it wont be that bad. I will just be kinda bummed cause I believe that this will be a shooter not to be missed that I am very much looking forward to playing. Just wish people could get a life instead of stealing and hacking everything. Hackers and Pirates svck!!

PC will not be overrun by cheaters. It's being protected by Valve Anti-Cheat, the same that protects Counter Strike.

If it can protect the world's most played game, it can protect BRINK.

Actually, protection should be even better then on Counter Strike, because CS allows for modding, and that brings in mathacks and wallhacks.

It will be using Steam servers with Valve Anti-Cheat, which is a very good system. I wouldn't worry about it for now. :)

VAC is great but as Rammite said, there is still a big hole regarding wallhacks. As long as server owners and the devs themselves, do not let users modify their character skins past the default in game customization way, we should NOT have any wallhacks. I know everyone wants to be able to have various skins and stuff, but there needs to be a limit.

Yeah, Wallhacks are the one hole in VAC, and only because Valve is far too modification-friendly to block it. Hell, all of thier games with the exception of Portal started as modifications.

Assuming BRINK won't allow you to modify the game files, you'll be completely set.

Oh, right. Silly me.

Hm, it's like all the singleplayer games are thiers, and multiplayer games modifications.

I had heard that Portal started off as an experiment to see how far they could push the HL2 Physics engine. If true, even it's not exempt.

UM lol you clearly only just read about Valve Anti Cheat, almost every game they claim to "protect" is full of hackers compared to it's Punkbuster counterpart (yea it can be twitchy but i preffer a tight, lean, paranoid kicking machine than some bloated, lazy, ignorant, clueless and pointless fat man who just wants to be friends), it has to be the worst anti cheat made that makes matters worse by giving out delayed bans instead of instant bans, thereby giving hackers anything up to a month of hacking without punishement, and Counter Strike has ALOT of hackers who use texture hacks and wallhacks. aimbots not so much because admins can spot that a mile off.

But honestly VAC is a [censored] joke, only truely effective anti cheat is a good admin with no anger issues or a revenge complex. here's hoping there's a gonna be a user name and shame site with all the known hackers, names and ID's put into a master banlist.txt to be used on all dediservers.

Awesome. Thanks for all the replies guys. I hadn't paid enough attention to see it was using VAC. My bad. I just hate being dissapointed so much lately. I'm looking forward to a little change and this should be what i'm looking for.

Actually from what I heard from director's commentary Portal actually came from a student game called https://www.digipen.edu/?id=1170&proj=501. Also the gel idea from Portal 2 came from another student game https://www.digipen.edu/studentprojects/tag/. I'd say try them out they are actually pretty fun.

Since there are dedicated servers, as long as you play on active ones, generally there are admins that can take care of the hacking. The downside is that from time to time, you may join one with a paranoid admin that bans for no reason.

VAC is kinda a joke. Punkbuster was better for server admins to gather proof, but it was still not full proof.

Keep in mind, now that the PS3 is hacked, its not much better. Especially for popular games as I am sure this one will be.

Fact is, on the PC, I have run into a few hackers. Just disconnect and join another server. Cheaters aren't that common, but you do run into them. When a game is new, you will probably not run into them at all - at least for a few months.

Touché.

Sometimes it seems that way, doesn't it. In this case, I'm happy to be proven wrong, as I'm downloading two fun-looking games. :celebration:

What I meant was that the games I have played using either Punkbuster or Steam (VAC) have been much better than other titles when it comes to cheaters. I have noticed far less anyway. No system is completely fool proof. But most EA servers such as the ones with Crysis 2 were awful....EA struggles with releasing games in my opinion thats why I was glad that it was not using the EA servers. The only recent EA game I havent had too many issues with was BFBC2 and they use punkbuster. But everything you guys have said have helped me understand a little more. I am fairly new to PC gaming and prefer any shooter on PC.

The problem I have with that is... well VAC isn't all it's cracked up to be. Remember "That Other Game" (aka MW2)? It had VAC support as well but you still found cheaters at least two per server a month after it's launch on a regular basis.

The reason why hackers are less prominent in games like TF2, is because the game fully supports serverfiles. You have minor tools like Archon for BC2 or Crysis 2 but that's not nearly enough. A functioning community, a server constantly full with high numbers and having admins on at a cycles notice, provides better support than any anti-cheat program anyone can develop to this day. This is why I hope Brink will be the next latest and popular FPS until BF3, because judging by the PC FAQ; we're being given back that which Infinity Ward took away for stupid reasons.

VAC doesn't ban isntantly becouse then the cheater knows what hack he got banned unlike vac. You use one hack in css for 1 week and pick up 3 new ones and you get banned 2 weeks later now what hack you got banned?
