Character Recustomization

Post » Thu Dec 23, 2010 8:56 pm

Whenever I played Oblivion, I made sure my character was as versatile as possible, because I liked doing many different things. However, I didn't always look the way I wanted for that role. So I would make a new character, but get bored having to go through everything I did with my previous character, being a jack of all trades.

My idea was being able to recustomize your character at some magic shop in a town, mainly becuase we won't even have specific classes anymore. It would be kind of like a superpowered Runescape (bad comparison I know...) But I think the idea would be cool. Thoughts?

edit: However, I think race changes are out of the question because that is too drastic of a change.

Are you talking a shave and a hair cut? maybe redo or add tatoos, I like it they will probably have it since fallout 3 did. I don't know if plastic surgery should be in, but maybe a wizard can remake your face. I don't think you should be able to change races tho. And changing your face should be complicated, like you have to do a quest for it

I don't care how they explain it, I want to be able to change my characters, I HATE getting 30 hours into the game, then decide I look stupid and start over. A problem perhaps only I have, but still.

Well I never really thought of race changes to be honest :/ I guess I should specify that.

But face restructuring could be possible by paying a mage a ton of gold, maybe.

I'm not sure about being able to change your face (although "magic" would easily cover it), but I hope there are barbers/hairdressers/tattooists in Skyrim. Also hope that the lighting is nice and clear when we go into face gen. at the start of the game.

You're definitely not the only one, I don't know how many times I remade characters just cause I thought my hair was dumb or I figure I should change one of my primary skills.

I'd love to change my character looks and hairstyle. You could do this in Fallout 3 with the hairstylists and your butler and Pinkerton. Pissed me off in Fallout NV that there was only one barber and you had to use the King's favor to use him.

Divinity II had what they called Illusionists who you could pay for a ultra small fee (50g I think, which is nothing) and you could change your characters name, six, face and eyes, hair and scar/tattoos. Was a nice system I thought, one which would be nice to see in Skyrim though without six/race changes imo.

That last bit is also on my Skyrim want list.

Damn, it takes you 30 hours to figure out that your character looks stupid? I mean, hell, I've made several characters that, within the first 30 minutes tops, I've found look stupid. I'm not sure how it could take so long unless you never look at your character, in which case discovering they're silly looking isn't a big deal since you almost never look at them anyway.

But, this problem is just another reason why the PC version is so vital for me and why I can't imagine having Morrowind or Oblivion on anything else. I would definitely like to see a barber or a tattoo artist or an Alteration Mage who can alter facial features. It would be nice to not have to use the console to change those things. Though you shouldn't be able to change race or gender in this way. That would be a little extreme.

I'm on the majority of people's side:

barber: yes
Tattooist: yes
Face change: maybe, if expalined right
six/race change: no

Well, even if the Nords are not an exactly equivalent to the Norse, I do believe that Nords are "inspired" by the Norse.

Resultantly, I look to Viking mythology and history to include the various Eddas, studies of archaeology and anthropology to create an historical image. I can then compare that image to life in Skyrim, knowing fully that Nirn is not Earth.

As far as being able to change the cosmetic appearance of one's player character, I know from my inquiries into Viking history, that they were very concerned about their appearance, groomed daily, washed their hands before meals, bathed often, and had saunas, etc.

Also available to them, were combs, razors, tweezers, and ear cleaners. Further, they had methods to "bleach" their hair color, to include beards. Those individuals of modest, or greater means, often had servants attend to them in matters of hygene, and grooming, etc.

With respect to cosmetics, those were available to much of civilization prior to that time historians have labeled the Viking Era, roughly from the late 700's, to about 1066 A.D. Note that the Vikings were skilled traders.

With magika, or not, it is not lore breaking to consider that some minor cosmetic changes could indeed occur, and that some sort of in-game shop could be included.

Personally, I am more in favor of being able to change hair style, color, and length, and to be able to modify beards, apply cosmetics and other markings, etc.

I am not in favor of racial or gender changes. For me, that would be lore breaking.

As long as it was just editing your hair, face, and body then I'd love it. Now, race and gender changing, no.

I would say yes to this but only if it's for changing your Facial appearance/Body Appearance and Hair color/Hair type. Your Race and Gender should be locked in when you 1st select it. Once you leave the tutorial area your stuck with that gender and race.

I can certainly understand why changing appearance is appealing, but, short of slight cosmetic changes, I'm against it. if you can create a character in the beginning and then decide that it looks weird or that you want to look more menacing then you have made no connection to your character. What would be REALLY interesting is using the Kinect or a camera composite to make the player's face within the game look similar to the player's actual face.

Race in Fallout 3 was only cosmetic, in Skyrim it will affect character stats, resistance / weakness and npc reactions making it far harder to change. Yes you could just change the look but this might also give bugs.
A wizard who change how you look would be no problem and has a high chance for being in. Would be very supriced if a barber is not in.

if they are going to take a page from what they learned in FO, they will have an option to change hair and facial hair. I have no idea how they would create a situation in which you could change the face with out breaking lore tho.

You could use the console command ShowRaceMenu if you're on PC. Hehe.

But hairdressers should be a necessity. Other than that, I'm not so sure. Maybe they could make it so there is ONE epic mage who can transform your face, but it is a tedious and difficult process making your way to his lair. And even then, you'd have to live with yourself knowing that your character doesn't have a natural face. Or you could pretend his face was always that way.
