Help needed to finish abandoned mod

Post » Sun Dec 26, 2010 12:46 am

Hello dear modders,

Unfortunately, one of the greatest mods ( in my opinion ) was recently abandoned. The mod allows NPC's to take the stuff from their killed opponents like armor, swords, money. Because its very unrealistically when a bandit for example, kills someone and is not taking their stuff. This also works very unbalancing to the game, because the player gets all stuff and becomes rich at low levels.

The mod is called "Finding Keepers" and it is completed for 50%. The author has stopped development :( ( see post #70 in the mod thread ) but he left all project files!, so other people could continue his work.

Maybe there are some modders who will finish this project? I can't do that because i don't know how to create mods.

Finders Keepers
A part of the BRAINS project

Progress: 50% complete
Release Date: Soon, I'm waiting on OBSE v0018.

I've decided to develop http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1005791&hl=brains in parts and release them as I go. This way, it will be easier for me to develop and you guys will get to play bits and pieces of it until I integrate them all together.

Description:
Why is it that you're the only one who ever gets rich in the game? Well the residents of Tamriel have had enough and they've decided to institute a new rule?"Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers!" No longer will NPCs wait around for the player to clean out all the loot, now they are just as likely to pick up loot as you are. So as the game progresses and you find cool new items, so will the rest of the residents of Tamriel. Finders Keepers allows any NPC (mod-added as well) to loot corpses or pick up weapons and shields off the ground. The intelligent looting system will allow NPCs choose which items to loot (e.g. A Mage may take spell scrolls whereas a Thief may take lockpicks). In the future this will also be integrated with BRAINS so that NPCs in combat can switch weapons/shields if they see a better one on the ground.

Planned Features:
  • Adds the ability for any NPCs (mod-added NPCs as well) to loot dead bodies, weapons, and shields on the ground
  • NPCs in combat without a weapon or shield may loot them off the ground or off dead bodies
  • NPCs will only loot items they like (e.g. A Mage may take spell scrolls whereas a Thief may take lockpicks)
  • Some NPCs may give you preference over the loot if they like you enough

  • NPCs may fight each other or you over loot

  • Ability to coerce NPCs into yielding loot they picked up

  • Some NPCs will pay their respects to the dead

  • Fully animated and voiced

Possible Features in Future Versions:
  • NPCs will try and sell their loot
  • NPCs may offer to sell you the loot they picked up if they like you enough
  • Ability for humanoid creatures to loot

  • NPCs may bury their friends bodies

  • Guards will take loot off of dead bodies and place it into a nearby evidence chest (thanks for phoenix1213 for the idea)

  • NPCs will be able to pick up any item on the ground, not just weapons and shields

Features in bold are new.

And finally, for anyone looking for a good chuckle here is a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mUEa9CKU30 of this mod in early development :hubbahubba:

As always, comments and suggestions are welcome!

Sounds like a great way to get started! Being able to make your own mods is deeply rewarding, and this sort of thing is how a lot of us got into it.

MMM also does this - check the Looting NPCs and Creatures plugin.

Though this seems to be more thorough in it's implementation, if judging the amount of scripts is anything to go by. I DL'd the package, and there's a fair amount of them.

I'm not sure I see any benefit to the player of this one. All it's likely to do is break quests, because some unidentifiable NPC got the quest item before you could.

Yes, there's an RP aspect to witnessing an NPC taking an item from a corpse, but the result is little different from their dropping things in inaccessible places, or not having them in the first place. If you're concerned about getting rich too quickly, just reducing the sale price of items (by adjusting merchant markup) is easier.

Most of the time in this game it's you alone against the mobs, and there aren't many cases where an NPC is in a position to take anything anyway. It would only be the rare times where you kill someone in a city (and don't get arrested for it) and can't grab all the victim's stuff because you can't carry it all, that this mod would make a difference.

Bump.

Maybe there are some modders who will finish this project or make a similar mod? ;)

NPCs are quite stupid and without an enormous amount of failsafes it could potentially be gamebreaking (picking up too much and becoming overencumbered, travellers looting daedric gear off of bandits and soon everybody's beefed out)

i like the idea though

Hmmm... sounds exactly like the player character!

Not much point really. MMM does this fine. And it always makes me laugh when I get owned by 8 bandits, they run up to me and nick all my stuff. I can't really see how you could improve it.

Yes, but MMM does this only to some of the MMM NPC's and not all NPC's in the game. :/

What could be better is the NPCs beat up the PC, steal his/her stuff, leave the PC for dead, and the PC has the option to take revenge - or maybe they have to find the bandits to retrieve a quest item.....can that be done....?

This mod exists. It's called 'Never Die' by Skycaptain and it's on tesnexus. (Sorry there's no link. this PC won't let me link for some reason)

Isn't this already done? There's an MMM plugin for it.. Or am I thinking of something else?

Yes, there is an MMM plugin but it works only for some selected MMM NPC's, but the idea is to do it for all NPC's in game. Read the description in the start-post.

This would break the game because someone might pick up a quest item before you.

Quest items can be checked for by scripts as long as the items are properly flagged as such. Then all the scripts would need to do is tell the NPC not to loot those items.
