The Best Graphics for my system.

Post » Thu Jan 13, 2011 11:13 pm

Hello, I've reinstalling Oblivion at the moment and I was wondering what graphics-enhancing mods (such as LODs, texture packs, Better Cities, etc.) would work best with my system's stats. Heres my system information and display devices.

4 gigs of RAM? I'm no expert but I'd say you could probably get pretty far with that. Try Better Cities, if that goes well you could consider Open Better Cities and if you really want to test your system (I think it could work) try http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20053

No, the 9600 while not a bad card is not a great card. You really don't want to throw too much at it, especially since it seems to be the mobile version used in laptops. They tend to be not as good as the standalone cards since they cut a few corners in order to try and reduce heat from the card. My 8800GT out-performs the 9600 in a number of areas and I wouldn't bother with RAEVWD. And physical RAM doesn't really have any bearing on the graphics part of the game, that's all up to the video card. Physical RAM is mainly used for any processor functions, like AI routines and pathfinding etc. not graphics.

PS: If you want to find some new graphics for your game this is the place place to start looking:

Really? I always thought that having the game handle so many objects would have an impact on one's CPU, which I thought was limited by RAM. Shows how shockingly little I know on the matter.

That's why RAM is split between physical RAM and VRAM. They're both basically the same thing but VRAM handles graphics memory exclusively, while physical RAM focuses mainly on CPU needs. There is some graphic processing done with physical RAM, but not very much. About the only time that physical RAM is used for graphics is when you have an integrated graphics chip that doesn't have it's own dedicated memory. It will then draw on physical RAM for it's functions. In the case of RAEVWD, your video card is the only thing you need to be concerned about. And the 9600 isn't really the greatest card you can have for it. It's pretty much on the bottom of the 9000 series. Alot will depend on your resolution and there are some ini tweaks you can make, so it might be OK to use it, it might not be.
