My son made me laugh.

Post » Thu Jan 27, 2011 3:10 am

Started to play Arena, and of course my son loved Morrowind and loved Oblivion. Still plays them both. So he saw me play Arean. I explained it was the very first TES game that I played over 15 years ago. So he started a game, and he went into map mode, and found out if he right clicked on it he could write stuff down. God bless his heart, he put in TCL and asked me "Daddy why can't I go trough the walls and fly now" LMFAO, oh it was priceless. I told him only Morrowind and Oblivion does that, not Arena or the next game we will play Daggerfall. He kept trying and trying and then I told him it was a map not the console commands.

Finally he is playing and having a blast, and dosn't care that the graphics are outdated. He can enjoy a game for what it is, and loves how he can travel the whole country instead of just a province.

Just I thought I would share this with you guys.

Its always good to hear that younger TES fans can still enjoy the older games. to be honest, it saddens me that so many people disregard or even mock games like arena and daggerfall simply because of the dated graphics. far to many people these days have forgotten that gameplay > Graphics.
Keep raising him right

Wow, there sure are a lot of buildings owned by a certain 'TGM' in this town.

That's pretty cool that you got your son to play Arena. It's such as beastly game.

i agree, i love oblivion and morrowind but i was blown away by the sheer size of daggerfall and the amount of things you can do. Arena is good but other than combat theres not enough to do in it.

But it was thier first game, so lots of room for improvement. I think they did an awsome job for a first time game in a series. I didn't have many complaints when the game first came out.

I don't mind the graphics at all. The control schemes in many old games bother me now, even though they felt fine when I was kid.

This reminds me of when my brother was about two. He liked some computer games already, so he came up to me with a pocket-sized Etch-a-Sketch and exclaimed, "computer!"

Reminds me of an old set of jokes that made the e-mail rounds back in the '90s. Went like this:

Frequently Asked Questions for Etch-A-Sketch Technical Support:

Q: My Etch-A-Sketch has all of these funny little lines all over the screen.
A: Pick it up and shake it.

Q: How do I delete a document on my Etch-A-Sketch?
A: Pick it up and shake it.

Q: How do I reboot my Etch-A-Sketch?
A: Pick it up and shake it.

Q: How do I turn my Etch-A-Sketch off?
A: Pick it up and shake it.

Q: How do I save my Etch-A-Sketch document?
A: Don't shake it.

The very same brother (now much older) tried to install Daggerfall recently. It was funny watching him not have a clue what DOSbox did. Even college programming courses no longer teach computers. I run into instructors who start spouting the strangest crap about operating systems. Result: nobody knows anything about computers and I make a lot of easy cash.

Yup I have. Once I saw the opening squence I couldn't let him play it. Just too reall life looking. I let him play Fallout 3, but at least it dosn't look as real as CoD and other games like it. He keeps asking but I said in a few more years you can play them. Nothing wrong with the game, but the cut scenes I can't let him see. Too bad there is not a way to turn them off.

At least he has his Halo for those games.

Wait..........what happened in the call of duty cut scenes? (Iv'e only played 2 and 4, not the sequel to 4) I never really found anything distressing in them, and the two I played were great. What did I miss that's suddenly over the top?

@OP: Cool. I'm a teenager, and I'm having trouble surviving Daggerfall, where I miserably failed Arena. Keep up the good work.

Gotta say, I love the game but the controls kinda svck :D
Imho, custom classes are way more fun in here than in morrowind/oblivion ^^

The cut scene I am refering to is when you have the 2 US soldiers kneeling and one of the Japaness I believe (could be wrong though) goes up to one of the soldiers and takes a short sword and goes behind the soldier, pulls his head back and slashes his throat. It was too real looking for a 7 year old at the time. Now he is 9 and it's still too real life for me. If that cut sceen was gone, I might let him play it, but will not take the chance.

Same for a game we both love on multiplayer, I will not let him play Crimson skies because of the cuts scene in the begining where someone shoot someone right in the head or something like that. We play multiplayer but will not let him play it single player. There is violence that can look not real and then there is violence that looks to real and then he wouldn't be able to distinguish what is real and what is not.

Halo while it looks real can be distinguished that it's not real, while the cut scenes in the game look real or not to real but can't be distinguished that it's not real. I hope that makes scense.
