Better Cities and Open Better Cities

Post » Sat Jan 29, 2011 2:17 am

Hi

On the OBC page it says that any BC can be run together with BC and the game won't ctd, however I have been trying to use OBC full, along with BC - better IC, but it's causing ctd on startup. The OBC doesn't open IC, so i thought it should've been ok to just use BC's better IC.esp along with everything else, but it's not working.

What I have tried is this:

using Open Better Cities full.esp
using Better Cities resources, i.e. better cities.esm etc.
using Better Cities - Better IC.esp

it doesn't work, am i doing something wrong?

Isn't Better Cities IC the same as ImpeREAL City- Unique Districts? Try installing that instead of Better IC.

Install OBC, then install BC, allowing BC to overwrite ANY files from OBC. Don't install any part of OBC or BC which you shouldn't be using - e.g. don't use the Blood & Mud version of OBC Full if you're not using the mod Blood & Mud, and don't use any of the compatibility patches which come with either OBC or BC for any conflicting mods which you're not using.

Only Elven Gardens and Arena Districts are the same as ImpeREAL City Unique Districts. All other IC Districts contain ImpeREAL City Unique Districts but have been further enhanced in BC.

Hi shiyaoay!

Thanks to the awesomeness of The Greatness, I was able to find your thread so I can tell you that I am having the exact same problem! :D

I'm pretty sure your problem lies within Better Cities - Better IC.esp. If you disable that, it should work fine. Problem is, you lack the mind exploding awesomeness that is Better Imperial City. I tried activating the separate districts of the city to see if it would still crash on startup, and so far it only does so when the Market District .esp is activated. Everything else runs fine, which is a shame, 'cause the Better Market District is probably one of quality market overhaul mods.

Edit: So I think I may have found the problem. I tried removing everything that had to do with the mods and reinstalled it using display's instructions. So far, the game actually loads up but I crash when trying to reload my old save, which doesn't really come as a surprise. Creating a new game seems to work fine and the cities work as they should. However, the Market District seems to have moved down a few steps and there are a few floating objects. I've found the note that says I should change up my load order even though I ran it through BOSS, however not even moving it right before the Bashed Patch seems to work. RESOLVED: Make sure you import the Better Imperial City.esp into the Bashed Patch. Fixes the floating issue.

shiyaoay, did you happen to download the patch from OBC told you to on tesnexus? The one that contains the .esm file? I think if you ignore that and just use the .esm file from Better Cities should get you passed the crash on start up.

Hi SB, and yes i fixed the problem by following dp's instructions, worked perfectly, no more crashed and the IC is the better version.

although i'm a bit confused though, since the cities are all open wouldn't any mod thats supposed to be "inside" the city be incompatible with OBC? obviously now theres no "inside" cell for cities so how will that affect most of the mods out there that adds things "inside" cities? i.e. would OBC be incompatible with almost every quest mod that alters/adds things to the cities?

Yes, if a mod adds something to the City worldspace then it will not show up ingame. I know Open Cities add "doors" to get into the vanilla city worldspace, not sure about OBC. You can always use the console to get into the vanilla cities also. Read the readme, some of the open cities patches work with OBC. Since OBC in no longer being developed, that is likely the best you are gonna get.

OBC also has hidden "doors" linking back into the closed city worldspaces. Just outside every single city gate, hunt around on the ground for a small grey brick. These bricks will give access to the closed worldspaces so that you can access content from other mods which aren't OBC compatible. Then simply use the city gates in the closed worldspaces or Fast Travel to return to Tamriel.

thanks a lot for the info, although i just decided to not use OBC anymore to avoid the hassle, besides, activating a brick to get into a city certainly isn't more immersive

Well that's because immersive-wise, the closed city no longer exists. It would have been even LESS immersive to have provided an actual door :)

Yes, and you'll find that in almost every case, the patches I provide work with either Classic or Reborn. BOSS is aware of them all, and they're generally super-easy to install. All of the popular quest mods that need one are covered.
