My two humble requests for Skyrim...

Post » Sun Jan 30, 2011 3:10 pm

First of all, I have a feeling this is it!!, this is the game that its gonna be IT, the best RPG game ever. Beth has enough experience to come out with something BRUTAL. Oblivion and Fallout 3 were SOOO CLOSE, now its gonna be it. And I gotta say Oblivion was pretty close IMO though, amazing game in almost every way, beatiful, deep and complex, huge!, except for two big or maybe HUGE flaws.

One: Spell system. While weapon combat was good and fun (I missed duel weild though) and I can't deny I had the most fun of my life playing a rogue, spell changing and casting(AKA, pause, cast, pause, cast, pause cast) destroys your gaming experience, like completely. I never could get the same feeling as meelee (inmersion wise) than as a caster even trying several times. I gotta say something here, or mostly, compare to something. World of warcraft. You got it there, thats how combat shoulda be: intuitive, fast and demanding skillwise, come on, don't bring the pain of playing with a control pad with 16 buttons to the PC, we have more than 100 in our keyboards, we need to bind DIRECTLY to keys, one button to cast a SPELL not one button to cast the "selected spell", that would cut the pause times 90% once you learn your keys. I never could understand how a game like oblivion was denied to be perfect with something so simple. This part of the game shoulda at least be opened for modding and improving. Seriously speaking this is something that MUST BE DONE and to be honest this is something that WoW its #1 now hands down.

Two: Third person view. Come on mr. gamesas, this can't be so hard. Three top #10 games already, millions of fans around the world, just cosmetic view? Feels so diferent to play in 3rd view. I miss it.

About my comments I don't wanna sound like a Wow fan, I can't play that game anymore it's boring to death but I do miss something while playing other games always. The combat system. It's perfect. I wanna transplant it from that game to oblivion, that would make Oblivion my top #1 game of this era. Play a spell caster in Oblivion its to pause 4-5 times per fight.

To end this my fellow readers I must apologize for my rusty english I know bad spelling pisses you all off, I tried hard on this thread. Discuss this if you share the same idea or similar ideas.
Thanks!

I think the third problem with Oblivion was the generic fantasy element. Morrowind had a lot more going on in terms of originality. Skyrim looks to be a much better thought out world. The environments look a lot more dynamic and epic in scale compared to Oblivion. I even saw Dwemer ruin shots in the trailer, and a number of different cave types.

eh you know there is a quickslot system in Oblivion that allow you to bind items and spells to the numbers keys, also in Skyrim spells are equipped like weapons, making you able to have up to 2 spells ready

they have made it clear they are actively working to make 3rd person better then previous games.

It's a "Cosmetic view", not a real functional view. It's stated as a cosmetic view, that you use only to see how your character itis currently looking.

Where is this stated? The only place I've ever seen it is here, from you. Linkage? Sources?

Hello Ralos, yes, I know about the quickslot system. And I know about some mods, that let you bind more keys in a very primitive but functional way.

But the original system...
lets you bind....

9 keys? or 8? I don't remember...

NINE Spells, oh wait you share it with weapons...
And items...

So in the end, we bind. 4 spells? There no combo fighting in that, its just a little, tiny, lazy comodity. I'm talking about combo casting here, about casting fireballs while slowing other foes. About puting curses in your target while hitting him with direct dmg. About healing you and your companions, bufffin them, supporting them. About hasting you to gain range then cast range magic, heals or whetever without pausing. That's good combat, something unseen in RPG's I have no idea why.

they have made it clear they are actively working to make 3rd person better then previous games.

Thanks for that info. Most apretiated i really want that to happen, thanks again.

I can't say I got it from an oficial source Alois, I think I heard of that "description" in the modding community they reffer to it as cosmetic view I think.

Now answer me something you played Oblivion in 3rd person view?

eh well there is only 1-9, not much ya can work with. Well as previously mention, as magic in Skyrim is equipped in your hands like a weapon, and the game has dual wielding

magic as weapon+dual wielding= 2 spells castable at the same time, and most likly twice as many quickslots

also in the latest gameplay trailer for a few seconds we seen a guy using magic with both hands, hitning we might be able to mix magic into bigger spells, but that′s just what I think.

Modding community =/= Bethesda. Everything I've seen from gamesas suggests it's intended as a mode to play the game in, just like first person.

Now answer me something you played Oblivion in 3rd person view?

Nope. I like first person whenever it's available, without regard to the good or bad qualities of any available third-person views. First person is one of the features I like about TES, third-person RPGs are a dime a dozen.

I heard about the magic dual weilding. Sound terrific, thats a big step into a more fast paced combat.
and now that you mention it, there's some really cool stuff than I can imagine with that system. I'm keeping my hopes high!

So I still think cosmectic its a good description. Fits perfectly.

I'd say the most important thing they'd need to work on for me to consider a TES game the greatest RPG ever, would be to improve quests, dialogue and make the world a bit less generic. For quests I specifically mean a lot less fetch quests or fed-ex quests as they are also known. They can get quite tiresome if there are too many of them in a game. I like my quests to be engaging and fun and not require me to run from one end of the world to the other all the time. That's also why I like what I'm hearing about having more emphazis on localised quests in Skyrim.

In regards to dialogue I have this feeling about Bethesda characters that they feel more like an actor speaking a line than a real person, if that makes sense. It's like the difference between a good actor in a good movie and a bad actor from a theater. Something feels off with most of their characters for me, they feel fake. Although it did improve greatly from Oblivion to Fallout 3, so I'm optimistic about Skyrim. They should take a page out of the book from devs like Obsidian and Bioware on how to do characters and dialogue.

And with the generic world, I mean that in my opinion most places in Oblivion looked very much alike. For instance dungeons looked like cut and paste and most places just lacked any destinction, like something that made it different from everywhere else. Everthing just looked like the same terrain when I was running around in the world. From what I've seen from the trailer that might very well not be a problem this time around.

Will it be the greatest game to ever grace the earth... I doubt it. There will always be things that they could improve. But will it be a great game? No doubt about it.

Excelent opinion and about improving, thats why I think it's important to let the modding comunity in. Time and fan-boys can fix everything on a game.
I wish they let the UI and Casting stuff be MOD-able.

After I'd played Oblivion for a while I started to sorta hate on it more than it deserved. The big problems like enemy, equipment, and reward level scaling really pissed me off; and a very boring click/click/click combat system also got very tired. Having take some time away, I can look back and see it was a very fun game that I spent lots of time with. I fully agree that it was close to being a great game, with a few major issues, but I completely disagree with you on that those issues were.

The magic wasn't a huge problem to me. It was a little bland but it did the job, and 3rd person...I just don't care about it. But I'm amazed to see you say the got close combat right....its just so...simplistic.

If I had to pick 2 things as you did that would help put Elderscrolls over the top and make Skyrim a game that I'd call great, my votes would be for:

#1 a more dynamic world in every way. Meaning merchants have supply caravans that come from mines, go to blacksmiths, and then to weapon stores. Investing in shops should make them look nicer, make the better dress proprieter flatter you and offer special items. When enemies are equally/more powerful than me and are landing good blows, they should brag and boast. When they are getting torn up, they shoud whimper, cry for comrads to aid them, and occasionally offer items or info for a truce. Etc, etc, etc...

#2 revamp close combat. Just rip off Mount and Blade: Warband. I love their combat, which is lightyears ahead of Elder Scrolls. Or have a simple combat (Oblivion) and advanced combat (M&BW) option.

The ES worlds have always been very interesting and huge. Recently they've also been quite pretty. A game whose guilds and story take the best from Morrowind and Oblivion, with great combat and a new dymanism would simply blow me away. (which is just what I thought of Daggerfall and Morrowind after I completed them)

I liked a lot your first idea, I don't think they would have too many trouble implementing that considering whats done in the fallout series.
