Physics of TES

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 6:52 am

So I have been spending an immense amount of time contemplating the various details of the lore of TES that we know of and have come to these conclusions about it's universe:

1. There is clearly mass that act upon the world and has the world react back on it.

2. There is gravity as evident by jumping and arrows, although we don't currently know the force/mass ratio as of yet. I personally think that they are using approximately 9.8 m/s^2 for gravity in the TES games simply because that's what we are used to, however, for all we know it could be half or twice as strong as ours.

3. The magicka system is and intriguing one. The details are:

a. Our world is held together by what most people call the electrostatic force. I am inclined to believe that the TES universe lacks such a force.
b. When the sky was ripped apart by the escaping Aedra. Those tears in the sky are what allow magicka into Nirn. (The planet Tamriel is on)
c. Magicka allows people to expand their mental faculties and exploit their surroundings in a variety of ways including but not limited to: manipulating objects far away, manipulating the temperature of an area, reanimating dead corpses (I don't know how ghosts and spirits fit into this), manipulating the minds of others, and healing one's self or others.
d. I personally believe that lightning is in and of it's self a manifestation of pure magicka being released in some nearly uncontrolled form. I have come to this conclusion after having heard about the combat overhaul, and how while fire and frost damage are all fine and dandy, lighting spells now inflict mana damage as well as health damage. Look at it like it's shorting out someones mana supply.
e. Now this is pure speculation, but I'd be willing to bet that if someone from TES were to mysteriously make their way out of the sub-creation from whence they came, and into our creation, they would retain what magicka stores they currently have, but it would from then on out fail to recharge.
f. Apparently I stumbled onto a new element, where it says lightning in the above post, I originally made a typo and put lighting. You can tell the difference, and now perhaps it makes more sense, I'm going to have to contemplate how light works into this for a bit and get back to it. -- After a little bit of thought, I've come to the conclusion that the Ayleids may be correct. It's rather complex, but if magicka was actually a replacement for the electrostatic force which is essentially an extension of the electromagnetic spectrum, then it is what binds all matter together. This force that magicka exerts on everything, it in it's purest form, may be white light. If this is true, it could explain a variety of religious influences for the Nine, among other things. It would also hold to explain more about Tamriel in general, but once again I must give it more thought.

4. The types of rocks and minerals in TES are considerable different. We can note that Ebony and Glass are in fact types of ores that are mined out of the Red Mountain. Whether or not these ores are structurally similar to Ebony (a hardwood) and Glass (melted sand... basically) is undetermined. I personally believe they just ended up with a name that is used in other ways. In light of this, we have to ask ourselves: "In the TES series of games, is there any type of tree that also creates Ebony?" It may also be of interest to note that the windows used in pretty much all of the buildings in Morrowind and Oblivion are, at least I think, made out of glass. I personally don't think that one mountain could fuel the worlds needs for such a vast quantity of ore.

Tell me what you think about this, what I call "super anolysis". Any ideas or feedback would be great.

Thanks Velorien for correcting me, It's been a while since I read through the creation story of TES.

It was the Aedra that escaped Mundus and ripped holes in the sky, the sun being the hole left by Magnus.

You're right about light being pure magicka from what I know. I think it was the Ayleids, or some ancient people, that considered Light to be one of the elements instead of fire, claiming that fire was just an uncontrolled form of light. Seeing as fire is magicka, it only makes sense that light would be in that regard too. The sun is also a hole to a dimension of pure magicka, Aetherius, and it's viewed to mortals on Nirn as a giant ball of light.

I'd say that theory checks out.

Velorien, you are quite correct about the Ayleids believing that light was an element, but they thought that fire was an impure form of light IIRC. So that would mean that it would have to have been tarnished by something. but what?

If I may, the Ayleids may have believed that light was an element, but that does not by any means make it true. Also, based on the premise that the Ayleids were correct, then rather than fire being tarnished by something, it could just be unrefined. Now I realize that they are in essence the same thing, but I'd like to point out that we're looking at it from two different directions. I find that if you look at it from my point of view (not that there is anything wrong with yours), then the questions ceases to be "What is wrong with it?", but "How do we fix it?"

That is very true. I hadn't thought about it in that way. However, I do think that the Ayleids are right about light being an element, it is in many of the magic effects. they all give off light, I can see their reasoning. also, if light was an element, that would mean that all the stars are a form of pure magic

Hm... I thought the starts were rips in the sky to a plane of existence entirely composed of magicka.

You are correct, but that being, then are not the stars and sun therefore pure magicka?

I'd like to think of them like wormholes... If you have a rip in space that leads to another area of space, albeit another dimension entirely, then the sun are stars are the light seeping through said rip and into the world. That is what we see when we look up at the nights sky (in TES games). That said, or rather, simply having the knowledge of how the existence of TES started can lead to the fact that being born under a certain series of stars can influence ones life. If you think about it like waves, then the various stars that one is born under may influence him with magicka that is constructively interfering with his capacity to exist in some ways and destructively interfering in other way.

Interesting viewpoint. I agree with you about the constructive and destructive interference
