BOSS just stopped working...

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 4:58 pm

I've been using BOSS since I got Oblivion but now all of the sudden it doesn't work. When I click the batch file, the usual screen flashes for a split second but it is blank and then a blank notepad file comes up. Then in my load order nothing appears to have changed (Wrye Bash is also full of red bars after I do it).

To get a few things out of the way: I am on Windows 7 but my Steam folder is not in Program Files (and that annoying as hell UAC is off), BOSS is in the correct folder as far as I can tell (oblivion/Data right?), BOSS for Fallout 3 works just fine I used it yesterday.

This is a brand new installation of Oblivion, I wanted to start fresh before installing FCOM, I haven't even started with FCOM yet my load order is currently just all official plugins and Unofficial patches. BOSS worked on my previous installation, and as far as I can tell I haven't done anything different. Any help?

Do you have the masterlist file in the same file as BOSS?

Yep it looks like everything is there.

I managed to screenshot the batch file as it first pops up when I click it, it says "BOSS.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file". Sounds to me like I'm doing something wrong lol.

Okay, what about boss.exe. That's what that error suggests.

It's there too, everything is there and in the right place, that is why this is confusing me...

EDIT: First problem found, BOSS.exe wasn't creating the modlist.txt so I created one, but the original problem still remains, the error is definitely with BOSS.exe though.

Well my load order is being sorted now at least, thats good I suppose, I guess I will just have to live with having a blank BOSSlog.txt every time I run it, unfortunately thats not ideal considering I will be delving in to FCOM in just a short amount of time, but at least BOSS works now

Have you tried setting BOSS to 'Run as administrator'?

Yeah, but all BOSS.bat does is run BOSS.exe, only difference is that the notepad file will come up at the end if you click BOSS.bat instead of exe. I don't know the specifics of how BOSS works but since the batch file doesn't work and the exe does, that is the only way to sort my mods for the time being.

UAC is disabled.

UAC is disabled, it removes the need for that.

Maybe I have it backwards, all I know is that what I am doing sorts my load order, but it isn't working correctly. As I said, the batch file fails to run the exe file but if I click the exe file individually it works fine.

That is all kinds of weird. Download the latest version of BOSS, extract it and all that, and then try running BOSS through this - http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=31766

It gives me the same error I got before creating a modlist.txt, aside from that it seems tedious as clicking the batch file wasn't very difficult in the first place.

I agree with you on that, but I was just wondering since the utility replaces....yeah, anyway. The fact that the modlist.txt file was not created really sounds like a UAC issue, but that's out... Do you have the C++ 2008 SP1 runtime update? Could you possible have done something to trigger the UAC to be turned back on...?

Edit: Have you tried rolling back to 1.51?
