"Cool" Games?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 11:03 am

so I am guessing it is because of his girlfriend wanting him to take a class with her.

Hes in one of those relationships, eh? My brother is like that with his girlfriend and college. They're in two separate programs but go to the same college and often sit in each-other's lectures and labs.

Back on topic though,

Its been reiterated many times throughout this thread, but opinions (like if something is cool or not) are only taken seriously if you empower them. Obviously theres some sort of feeling of subordination towards this figure if it gets you riled up that if he could declare such a thing.

Ya he is.

But ya popular people have always been a thorn in my side ever since I was little. It's one of those things where people tell me to let it go, but I can't seem to no matter how much I try to ignore it. I am just glad that in college you don't see as much of that as you see in high school. But alas there is still some. So it's getting easier to ignore, but still... meh.

But I am going to play whatever the heck I want. "Popular" games are honestly boring for me. I did like CoD for a long time, but I got bored of it after playing it for so long. I haven't even played one mission in Black Ops yet, and I don't intend to. I've got a feeling that Crysis is going to become the new popular game now that it seems CoD is slowing down. It hasn't ended yet, but it seems like it is slowing down. And for the sports games.... urg... I can't play them for too long. Unless it is NFL Blitz. that was a great game (my favorite was NFL blitz 2003)! But I mean just go get all your buddies together and play some football, or basketball, or soccer! I guess you couldn't really play hockey unless you had a personal ice rink in you backyard haha.

To find the answer we must first agree on one thing: What is a cool thing? When is something cool?

Deep philosophy tells us that this is releFant and will change depending who we talk to, because it's an opinion and not an actual fact.

But you could say that nerd games are games where you have to use your brain (more than usually) and non-nerd games where you don't need to use your brain(as much). But that doesn't give us a answer to what a cool game is. imo, strategy games are nerd games, thus ice-hockey strategy simulator games are nerd games. So perhaps my anolysis of what a nerd game is and is not, is wrong.

If a cool thing is the same thing as something that many like, then CoD would be a cool game, because both nerds (me and my friend) and my other friends (sports guys etc) like them somewhat. However the sports friend of mine doesn't understand the point in TES or Fo, which my nerd friend does. Basically that means both TES and Fo (open world RPGs) require too much "unnecessary brain usage" for the sports guy to like them, but he likes GoW, CoD and Uncharted. However, he also like sports games, but that might because he feels it is something he can do well because it's a skill he has picked up in real life as an ice-hockey player.

Hmm. I guess I don't really have a point with this post, just thinking about it out loud. Or not so loud, it's written after all...

Really? huh... I don't know.. I will probably buy it just so I can play the hopeful ending to the series, but I dunno. It won't be made by infinite ward, and I was a devoted fan to that company.. I feel as if it is kind of a kick in the face to infinite ward that they are still making the series go on. but who knows! It might be the best CoD game since the first MW.

10+ million people disagree. Hell, even my brother's dumb jock friend loved Fallout 3, because he got to do whatever he wanted.

Did you read the "IMO"?

I don't care if most people think COD is cool and games like TES are for nerds. I think TES and FO for that matter is a much better and as such cooler game than COD ever was/is/will ever be

Scientific studies.

Studies that don't make sense since one can't define what cool is...it's too relative. So saying there are studies that prove that some games are for nerds and others are cool is either wrong or those studies are inaccurate.

I think a game being cool relates to how social a game it is (multi-player), and how realistic it is (Not Sci Fi)
i.e. CoD has multi player and is meant to be realistic.
I also think that games that involve magic are also not considered cool.

Just thought i'd say i loved oblivion and almost any other single player magic involved game.
I got sick of CoD after playing for a couple of days!

but what about the games that aren't realistic and have multiplayer. Like Resident Evil 5, Lost Planet 2, and Halo? those games are fun (LP2 not so much) and have multiplayer as well. I can tell you they ain't realistic. Are you suggesting that the game needs to be both realistic and multiplayer to be considered social and cool?

I am the same way. Oblivion is still fun to play, and MW2 is needing to be sold...

Yes, he is. And if you took a large survey of which games were more nerdy or more cool between sci-fi multiplayer games, and historic or modern military multiplayer games, the majority will state that the sci-fi games are nerdier. And "cool" and "nerdy" have no meaning unless you have been labeled as such by a large portion of society.

I want to first see how science has anything to do with this topic as in one of your posts saying that "scientific studies" show how people think things are cool and nerdy. I am thinking it is more of a statistics research then anything.

thats where this post comes in. you are saying that taking a large survey will figure out what people have to say about games being nerdy and cool, which leads to the subject of statistics. Statistics is really survey driven. Making a survey, collecting, and organizing all the data, then doing the math to find out what your outcome is.

That is why your first post of it being scientifically driven doesn't make any sense to me. It seems like you put that there just to feel smart...

aaaaaaaaaand I will let you take the huge survey of what people think about cool and nerdy games!

I'm actually not going to buy a single CoD game ever again. Maybe in 10 years when they actually bring something new to the table. They are that cool. :/

Thats Exactly what i'm saying.
I dislike the CoD games, well actually all modern military shooters but i feel that they would be the games that are considered "cool"
My favorite games are the halo series, prototype, and mass effect 1 & 2, which i consider "nerdy games"

totally agree. accept the prototype part... and the part where they are nerdy games. I think all video games can be considered nerdy to some point.

I said hopeful ending... I realize what your attempt at humor is saying, thats why I put hopeful before the ending part of it..
