The Mantella was the battery used to power the Numidium, in the event that Shor's heart wasn't in there. It wasn't until DF that Arctus could reclaim his soul, but before that he was the undead abomination that tried to reclaim it, so he can finally die.

Right, but Arctus bound his life force to the Mantella which was subsequently blasted into Aetherius. He then became the Underking, the undead guy. But I thought there were more than one Underking?

I guess my first question was whether or not Arctus ended up in Aetherius as we were on the subject of who's been there.

Well, from all stories, the Underking defeated the Numidium, breaking it across Nirn, and the Mantella lost. In addition, this fight caused him to be extremely weakened, so he retreated to regain his strength or until the Mantella resurfaced.
