Laptop crashes when installing driver

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 9:08 am

So I'm trying to update my Nvidia driver, and after it downloads, it looks like the .exe installs correctly. When the little progressbar disappears, one of those boxes pops up (similar to when you're loading Photoshop or something, except it's Nvidia), and my laptop crashes. Any ideas?

Is it the correct driver for your graphics card model, off the official Nvidia site, and for the correct operating system?

Many laptop OEMs make their systems proprietary and therefore incompatible with generic drivers from the hard makers -- you have to get the drivers from the OEM instead

Sony VAIO

Sony is the worst offender at making their laptops incompatible with drivers direct from hardware manufacturers. Hit up Sony's website and download the drivers from there

Sony VAIO

Try downloading your driver from http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/updates/index.aspx?l=en_gb.

Thanks, but I can't figure out my model or serial number...

edit: I found the model but it isn't on the list.

Try http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl.

It says "Unable to detect your model"

edit: Nevermind, that was a Chrome issue. It gave the same model I found in system info, the one that isn't on the list.

Did you NEED the driver you are installing or is it just a recommended upgrade?

I say this because newer drivers ARE NOT always best. Sometimes they conflict with existing equipment or other software on your system and cause problems. If you had no nVidia driver installed before this, odds are you have the wrong driver or there is something on your system conflicting with the install program. You could try a program like EndItAll to force shutdown all programs and processes not absolutely needed and see if it installs fine after that.

No, I guess I don't need it.
