Mystery Science Theater 3000

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 12:28 pm

I've been watching season 9 recently and just saw their lambasting of Hobgoblins - good grief that film has to be the worst they ever heckled! I couldn't stop laughing, even without the hosts egging the movie on...

That got me wondering, who else here is a fan of MST3K? And who was your favorite host, Mike or Joel? I kind of like them both, but I think Mike was a bit funnier. Shame the series eventually was cancelled, but 11 years is a more than respectable run for any show. Haven't tried any RiffTrax yet, but I've heard they're just like MST - anyone given them a go?

Post any favorite episodes, too. "Pumaman" was another pretty hilarious one, and of course "Space Mutiny" starring the incredible Reb Brown. :P

I still regularly have the cardboard cutouts and their Hobgoblins song stuck in my head.

Glad to see other MSTies here. I've got just about every DVD released for MST3K and a few of the Rifftrax. They have so many good episodes its hard to pick my favorite, but I definitely laughed the hardest at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iva2g8aqYT8 scene. I'll probably watch Hobgoblins now  .

For me Joel was the better host, though it may also be because Mike was stuck with Pearl instead of Dr Forrester and TVs Frank.

I don't specifically remember Hobgoblins, sounds like I have plans for this weekend afterall!

I do remember Manos: The Hands of Fate. I don't know how they got through that movie even to prescreen and write their jokes. I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite overall episode, maybe The Day the Earth Froze, but I do have a favorite joke. In the Santa Clause Conquers the Martians episode there is a bit where Joel asks the bots what they want for Christmas. Crow states "I want do decide who lives and who dies"

That was such a great show, I wish we could somehow bring that team back and lock them away and force them to produce more episodes...or maybe just ask nicely. Maybe it would be better if..

Wait! I've got movie sign!!

They pretty much still do, though its no longer called MST3K. Cinematic Titanic has most of the original cast with Joel and they riff on B movies and such. Rifftrax has Mike, Kevin, and Bill (plus the occasional special guest like Chad Vader or Weird Al) where they they riff on modern movies and the occasional short or B Movie. I haven't seen any Cinematic Titantic but Rifftrax gets a definite recommendation by me, though I sometimes get a bit conflicted hearing them Riff on movies I actually like... Though they really shine when tearing apart crap movies like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXg6dMJGL5k  .

I do remember Manos: The Hands of Fate.

Years ago, my brother injured his leg. As he came limping down the hall one day toward the room, I started playing the Torgo theme, and he nearly re-injured it laughing.

Ah yes, the haunting Torgo theme song!

My friend got me into MST with the movie. I loved it and still have a couple episodes on VHS. I have to find them, but I think one was called Invasion Cuba, or something. It had Joe Don Baker in it though. I remember that. I guess Mike was my favorite host because he was the first one I saw.

Best series ever. Fact. Never less funny even after drastic changes as perceived by the fanbase. Fact.

Used to watch MST3k when it was on Sci-Fi, but stopped watching when they moved it. Have to say that was some funny *bleep* right there and loved some of the comments from the robots.

Awesome!

I think Mike is funnier than Joel, but I've seen more Mike, so that might be influencing my opinion. They do a pretty good job on rifftrax too. Not quite as good, but it's a great way to watch a big-name movie that you didn't really want to watch, but you want to watch it so you can 'fit in'. Just watch the rifftrax, have a good laugh out of it, and then talk about how much the movie svcked to all your friends. :P

MSFT3000 I associate with many, many weekends of indulging in excess vices, long, long ago. It was of course, made more hilarious by the condition in which we watched it.
I liked the original guy, Joel.
