The Nine

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 11:54 pm

From what I have seen the nine divines do not directly intervene with the affairs of men very often. Especially relative to how much the Daedra seem to. I remember in the end of Oblivion Akatosh shows up (or at least his avatar). What other instances are there of the divines affecting the events on nirn after the dawn era?

Throughout Morrowind, the Nine may have intervened slightly with the Nerevarine. Talos blessed his journey to Red Mountain, and in a bandit cave, the Nerevarine has the option to free an incarnation of Kynareth.

Several Divines avatars were present in Morrowind. The Prophet (Talos) was in KotN along with some other actions by Kynareth.

Kyne sent Morihaus and Pelinal down to aid Alessia. Although the Divines had nothing to do with it, the Empire attributed the Warp in the West to the Divines, so the people of Tamriel don't regard them as exclusively passive.

There was also the avatar of Zenthar, and it was not Kynareth, it was Mara.

The issue with the aedra, compared to the daedra, is that the aedra willingly weakened themselves to create mundus, so they're probably too weak to directly intervene. Akatosh was able to do it, only because Martin allowed himself to be used as his avatar, along with the blood from the Amulet of Kings. It's probably a bit taxing on them to manifest an avatar on Nirn. Shor gets away with it a lot, for there are many times in Nirn history where there were the nords mantle him for a while, and smash some damn elves.

The Divines don't get involved with such stuff very often, but maybe they should, it will make things more interesting...

Werent the nines power and lifeforce diminshed after they created Nirn, I may be wrong. That would explain why they dont show up. I think I read somewhere that Mundus was a complete mess, so Magnus and his followers left Mundus behind and went back to Aetherius, thus creating Magic. But Akatosh didnt leave, instead he created time (?), thus restoring Nirn to a normal state.
Im a lore noob btw :).

As I recall Akatosh was the first being to really form. The invention of time (Akatosh) made the existence of the other spirits easier.

Magnus made the plans and diagrams for Nirn but left because it wa to unstable. The Aedra sacrificed parts of themselves to repair the mortal world. They became the Earth Bones, or the laws of Nature. Many of the Aedra did not survive however. The only ones that are left are the Nine (minus Talos).

I also recall Uriel Septim saying that the Nine guide things with an 'invisible hand'. Perhaps the Nine operate more behind the schemes like some kind of puppet master, instead of taking the direct approach like most Daedric Princes seem to prefer.

Also, the daedra do make a conscious effort to try and lure mortals away from worshiping and praising the aedra, in order to be an affront of their efforts to create the mortal realm. To be more popular, they try to be a lot more involved and in your face.

Besides some rumors there is no evidence that he's Talos...

Actually he should have been Umaril... but the shape-shift thingy was transported to the Isles...

It's not meant to be certain, but its pretty obvious.

Umaril warning of his own return? Complete with pro-Alessian wording? Nah.

Bethesda could have easily have twisted it up to a good story... But the Idea was canceled anyway..

Oh well, Knights still gave us some good lore :P

Another interesting fact about the Nine is that although most races have the same basic idea, there is much less certainty about what each divine is in charge of. No one panteon can be taken in whole, but the Alessian one seems to be the most widely accepted. Unlike the daedra, whose realms are fairly static.

PS I myself prefer the Khajiit gods, they are far more interesting.
