Region filter on console?

Post » Wed Feb 02, 2011 1:25 am

Hey, i did a quick search for region filter and only 2 threads popped up about dedicated servers.

So sorry if i did miss an answer anywhere BUT is there region filter on console? i know console is only p2p :( more games should make the switch to servers, its getting a bit more common. Anyway what i HATE is when devs make a matchmaking system that just dumps people together from around the world giving a poor poor connection just to save time, i know some give the option for 'good connection' but doesnt always help.

I want a region locked search, is it going to be there? can they patch one in if not ? :)

I think that the reason for why there are few console dedicated servers is because on a PC you can type into a global chat, on a console background programs do that job for you. I do not really believe that dedicated servers will ever become a common sight for console games, feel free to quote me on that.

But back to the topic; I doubt there will be a regional option as there are no dedicated servers for the consoles. When systems work via P2P, listener servers are found matching only very few user criteria; game mode, difficulty, etc. The game will then work out your skill rating, your location, and many more statistics. It will then use this information to find you a listener server in the right region.

i've had experience with games that dont have region filter that in the late evening(UK) i will be put into many games with people from US but during the day it will usually be europe, i know its because of time difference of when people come on n off but i dont mind waiting a bit longer for a GOOD connection. as long as i dont get kicked out after every game n have to find another ?_?

I'm expecting, and personally hoping, NOT to have region lock.

But if the game pairs people (as Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood did until recently) based on connection, while NOT restricting by nation, you should be fine.

Main reason I don't want this is because Au/NZ market for games is pretty tiny, and I'm nocturnal. There are NO local players available for gaming consistently when I'm able to function, so I'd be mostly alone, and it would be bad.

does anyone know a real answer to this?

and in reply to obliviondoll, i guess the option to use it is the best way, so people like you can get everyone but people like me can restrict it? :) Mainly because where i live the internet isnt amazing speeds, its ok but its not optic or anything.

I'm only on ADSL, and in any game which allows you to connect based on ping without any region restrictions, I'm usually fine. If your connection is really bad, you'll be limited to MOSTLY (but not entirely) people in your region anyway, and you'll probably never be the host as long as anyone else in the game has a better connection than you. That's what I want them doing, not region locking. You can sometimes get a worse connection between two people in Gernamy, or two people in the US, than you'll get between one of the Germans and one of the Americans. It's about ping times, not geography.

That's what I'm wanting. And it would work for you better than your own idea.

Lesson of the day: elongating syllables and/or adding extra copies of the same letter into words gives you the ability to cross language barriers.
