Does the trailer confirm no more floating head?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 2:43 pm

My guess is that the camera will only shake when sprinting, just to emphasize you're running fast and hard (that's what she said), and that the only view bobbing regularly will be your weapon moving up and down. Which, in my opinion, is the way to go.

I really liked seeing my own body in Mirrors Edge.

DOWN WITH FLOATING HEADS! :flame:

Poor choice of words. He should have said motionless head while running.

ah. I never thought the motionless head angle while walking was an issue, either way it was fixed in FO3/NV and they will probly use either FO3 style or improve upon it.

Yeah I agree I hope the motion for running doesn't shake the screen too much or there's an option to turn that off.

Even if this part of the trailer was "custom animated", and we don't have running like that in game, I'm sure a modder (maybe even myself hehe) will be inspired enough by the trailer to make it an option for us PC peoples.

I'd rather have a steady view when I'm actually running around and when I'm sprinting I would like the rocking look. The shaking screen could quickly get old annoying or disorient some people. The problem with the rocking screen all the time is that in other games that had used the same feature, there were people that couldn't keep playing it because of motion sickness.

I thought this too when I first tried out Deadly Reflex for Oblivion, which adds head bobbing. It was really weird at first but after a while I just cant go back to the perfectly steady motion Oblivion used to have.

Though, I think it should be a toggleable option in any case.

Edit: Ill get motion sick in cars sometimes and on just about anything at a carnival.

Guys, the footage of the dragon and Dovahkiin is scripted. Don't be thinking that's how battles will look.

This.

And the view-shaking will not be in the game. It's been established that it gives a great many players motion sickness. If it's in it will be very subtle.

I don't recall seeing the player's body in first person at any point in the trailer. While the sequence of running through the forest did look more realistic than running usually has been in past games, I think that's just an effect added to sprint, and I still didn't see any part of the other other than the hands. In short, while I haven't given up hope on seeing the character's body in first person yet, this trailer doesn't confirm we will.

As far as the dragon fight being scripted, I don't doubt that the fight itself was scripted, as it seemed to flow just too perfectly to be entirely dynamic, but it's still in-game footage, and we could even potentially see things like that in scripted events in the game, and I see no reason to assume that just because it's scripted means that the sprinting won't reflect what we'll see in the actual game. It's still in-game footage, just scripted, just like how what characters do in Oblivion when control is taken from you are scripted, though of course, this is a lot fancier than such scripted events, because having a person walk up to another, hit him with a sword once, and cause him to drop dead wouldn't look very impressive for the trailer.

It looked more like a mixture between scripted and non-scripted gameplay to me. The dragon fight was obviously scripted, everything lined up a little "too perfectly" for today's technology, it was more like movie emotion and action. I would be thrilled to be proven wrong, but i just can't help but feel the entire dragon fight was staged to the last breath. The rest of the gameplay looked unscripted and, and as for the sprinting effects i really hope thats in. I would imagine that the head-shaking (if in the game) would only apply to the sprinting mode, and i would imagine would be allowed to be turned off at will.

yes the dragon fight was scripted but im not sure about the sprinting part with the bobbing head, and yes you are able to sprint in the game but i dont know about all the effects. game still looks awsome

My guess is that it only bobs when you are sprinting, and not while running/walking. The parts where you're walking in first person with the staff doesn't seem to have any bobbing at all.

This. But I recall that the camera bobs as well whenever a hard hitting strike delivered by your character in first person view (the scene with the draugr and the giant spider spring to mind).

Seeing how the hands and weapons are physically interacting with npc's in first person, I really can't see how they won't have the body visible during these moves without looking strange. I hope we can see our own shadow being consumed by something terrifying approaching our flank too. :o

I think those "interactions" are just prescripted finishing moves. Remember, one for each weapon and enemy type.
Full body awareness with actual 3D model used (clip away head and head accessories), adjustable amount of head bobbing, and freelook - those are my "basic needs" wrt 1st person immersion. Throw in TrackIR support too for those into that. If a small company can do it for a niche product like a war simulator, so can BGS with it's "unlimited resources" (in comparison).

Sprinting has been confirmed by the article http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/01/24/skyrim-building-better-combat.aspx GameInformet put out:

"If you want to flee, you must turn your back to the enemy and hit the sprint button"

It would seem silly to have the floating head when sprinting is available, so there will with all certainty be head bobbing.
